Senryu are Japanese poems of the haiku form. Although haiku preceded senryu by about 100 years, the evolution of the latter was inevitable, as they deal with concerns not addressed by the more idealistic and spiritually elevated haiku. Senryu can be ironic, poignant, humourous or bitter, but their themes always reflect the everyday concerns of ordinary people, and their concise character portraits of the swaggering samurai, the mean mother-in-law, the lovesick habitue of the gay quarters and the jealous wife, allow an insight into the traditional Japanese life available nowhere else.

This is a collection of Japanese senryu poetry—a lesser known cousin to haiku poetry. In 1765 Karai Senryu published a selection of tsukeku that reflected his personal taste and humor. This anthology, Yanagidaru, became widely popular and was followed by 22 more of the same title, also compiled by Senryu, and a further 144 volumes compiled by his successors to the tradition. The type of poems Karai chose eventually came to be known as senryu. They did not require inclusion of a seasonal word, as did haiku, which developed from the introductory portion of linked verse. Although senryu were at first written in only seventeen syllables(in lines of five, seven, and five syllables) or fourteen syllables(in lines of seven and seven), these rules became less strictly adhered to as time passed. The main difference between senryu and haiku is one of tone. The meaning and structure of a haiku can be brilliant, but I personally often find them conventionally serious and sentimental, offering few surprises. One has to be a near genius to write good haiku, but almost anyone can write reasonably good senryu; the form seems somehow to have escaped the structural restrictions that bind and, perhaps, limit haiku.

Similar in form to the well-known, more serious haiku, the satirical—and often humorous—poems known as senryu have received little scholarly attention because most were written by anonymous amateur poets and were therefore considered popular literature unworthy of serious study. Senryu are interesting, however, precisely because they reflect the thoughts and feelings of ordinary townspeople in a way that other more orthodox types of Japanese literature do not. In his introduction on the nature and historical background of the form, Makoto Ueda explores the elements of humor and satire contained in senryu, highlighting the mores that lie behind the laughter the poems evince. Collecting 400 eighteenth- and nineteenth-century poems—with the romanized Japanese verse presented at the bottom of each page—Light Verse from the Floating World is divided into thematic sections, each preceded by a short introduction: satirical senryu, aimed at people of the ruling warrior class and civilians of various professions; senryu on human relationships—between young lovers, husband and wife, parent and child, or family members of different generations; poems on townspeople enjoying themselves in the "amusement" district; ridicule of well-known historical figures; and poems on the poets' general outlook on life. SMUG SENRYU, a collection of 240 syllabic haikulike 'itemettes,' is intended to be very jokey, very fun. The essential smugness may be seen in how the author of the aggregation strove to cling absolutely to rigorous aspects of **5-7-5** in terms of counting the included syllables; also, each of the individual brief items might seem to insist on being only one basic English sentence. That no wish or attempt ever existed to honor some of Basho's supposed haiku approaches may at least hugely justify the modern and perhaps generic title "senryu"?
