Why speak about a new practical theology, when practical theology seems to be as old as theology itself? Is another "new approach" really necessary? The work aims to set practical theology on a new foundation as it explores the discipline's modes of discourse, leaving aside the question of contents. Practical theology is examined from the point of view of its workings, as it attempts to grasp and give account of faith practices. In the course of this examination, questions relative to the linguistic apparatus are raised. Is this apparatus always coherent? Does it allow for the creation of a relevant theological discourse? On what philosophical traditions does it depend? Experience, language and belief are key notions around which the whole system revolves. The perspective adopted here is largely indebted to contemporary American philosophy. Pragmatism (Peirce, James, Dewey, Rorty) and Analytic philosophy (Quine, Goodman, Putnam, Davidson) are employed in a quest for new epistemological footings. While the result is at times disconcerting, it brings with it a surprisingly rich contribution to reflection in the field. This book offers theologians a tool which allows them to construct theological discourses which are anchored in faith practices. It fills a void in contemporary theology. Many theologians, no longer content to simply teach at a university, have chosen to work in close collaboration with Christian communities or with groups interested in the relationships between religion and society. Up to this point, theologians such as these have not had the tools at their disposal which would allow them to take account of their own practices. Opening out into many fields, Practical Theology. A New Approach will also be of interest to any researcher, philosopher or scientist, who is interested in the questions surrounding the construction of discourse based on human practices, whatever their provenance.

Psychology And The Three Cultures written by Rosalyn M. King and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-17 with Philosophy categories.

This book discusses the history and evolution of the field of psychology and its position as a global, integrated, hub science. It presents the nexus between science, the humanities and social sciences. It addresses the seminal work of Cambridge physicist C.P. Snow, who, more than five decades ago, wrote the book on The Two Cultures, outlining the intellectual schism between the academic disciplines—the humanities, arts, religion and the sciences. Today, the social sciences comprise the third culture; and Jerome Kagan, a Harvard developmental psychologist, published a book in 2009, The Three Cultures: Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and the Humanities in the 21st Century, responding to Snow’s earlier concerns that includes a look at the newest culture—the social sciences. Psychology and the Three Cultures—History, Perspectives and Portraits, examines early and current notions about the three cultures reflecting on C.P. Snow’s treatise on The Two Cultures, and Jerome Kagan’s treatise on The Three Cultures, as related to the field of psychology. The book illustrates how psychological science, historically, has blended all these cultures in order to understand human nature. It traces the history of psychology, highlighting pivotal places and people from around the world contributing to the evolution of the field. The book documents psychology as a global, integrated, hub science and a blend of the disciplines. The discussion here includes the emergence of psychology from the field of philosophy and the many subfields currently representing psychology today. Examples are provided of select subfields moving across disciplines, as well as portraits of three revolutionary scientists—Carl Jung, William James and Stanislav Grof—whose work intersects many disciplines as they study, understand and describe human nature. This book is a “must-read” for scholars, psychologists, social scientists, scientists, historians, and medical professionals, undergraduate and graduate students studying the history of psychological science and its evolution. The book is also written for lay persons interested in the field of psychology, dispelling the myth of psychology as a pseudoscience.

Ritual Performance And The Senses written by Michael Bull and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-18 with Social Science categories.

Ritual has long been a central concept in anthropological theories of religious transmission. Ritual, Performance and the Senses offers a new understanding of how ritual enables religious representations – ideas, beliefs, values – to be shared among participants. Focusing on the body and the experiential nature of ritual, the book brings together insights from three distinct areas of study: cognitive/neuroanthropology, performance studies and the anthropology of the senses. Eight chapters by scholars from each of these sub-disciplines investigate different aspects of embodied religious practice, ranging from philosophical discussions of belief to explorations of the biological processes taking place in the brain itself. Case studies range from miracles and visionary activity in Catholic Malta to meditative practices in theatrical performance and include three pilgrimage sites: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the festival of Ramlila in Ramnagar, India and the mountain shrine of the Lord of the Shiny Snow in Andean Peru.Understanding ritual allows us to understand processes at the very centre of human social life and humanity itself, making this an invaluable text for students and scholars in anthropology, cognitive science, performance studies and religious studies.

Battle In The Mind Fields written by John A. Goldsmith and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-20 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

“We frequently see one idea appear in one discipline as if it were new, when it migrated from another discipline, like a mole that had dug under a fence and popped up on the other side.” Taking note of this phenomenon, John Goldsmith and Bernard Laks embark on a uniquely interdisciplinary history of the genesis of linguistics, from nineteenth-century currents of thought in the mind sciences through to the origins of structuralism and the ruptures, both political and intellectual, in the years leading up to World War II. Seeking to explain where contemporary ideas in linguistics come from and how they have been justified, Battle in the Mind Fields investigates the porous interplay of concepts between psychology, philosophy, mathematical logic, and linguistics. Goldsmith and Laks trace theories of thought, self-consciousness, and language from the machine age obsession with mind and matter to the development of analytic philosophy, behaviorism, Gestalt psychology, positivism, and structural linguistics, emphasizing throughout the synthesis and continuity that has brought about progress in our understanding of the human mind. Arguing that it is impossible to understand the history of any of these fields in isolation, Goldsmith and Laks suggest that the ruptures between them arose chiefly from social and institutional circumstances rather than a fundamental disparity of ideas.
