Senses Of Paris written by Robin Bower and has been published by RB Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-17 with categories.

This book is a collaboration of words and illustrations by two old friends inspired by Paris. The artist, Christine, and the writer, Robin, have created a visual commentary on their impressions of this city that is both a romantic cliché and a chaotic modern metropolis. Twenty-five years after each of us journeyed to Paris in separate circumstances, what most struck us about the present-day city was the diversity and delight of its people. Two million people inhabit the most populated 100 square kilometres in the European Union, with around 20% of the people born outside of France. This huge multicultural mix gives rise to unique areas like Place du Chateau Rouge (African), rue Nationale (Chinese), Gare de L'Est (Indian), Rue des Rosiers (Jewish), Beaugrenelle (Lebanese), rue Sainte Anne (Japanese), Rue Oberkampf (Spanish), and rue Daru (Russian).Staying in an apartment in Montmartre near Chateau Rouge allowed us to experience the colour and vivacity of the African community -- its markets, hair salons, food and music. After our trip together, we thought about how we could record our journey to do justice to Paris as much as that can be done. Paris is about the senses. Every aspect of the city imbibes the mind, body and soul with the sights of artistic excellence and architectural wonders, the taste of culinary delights, the scent of oil paint and spice, the sound of a jazz café, the touch of a hand. The senses are the touchstone of our connection with Paris. You might consider this book an illuminated journal, a coffee table book where you can sip the pages at leisure, or a gift for lovers of all things Parisian. For us, it has been a journey into marking a place with our own pen and brush through all our senses.

Rudolph Koenig was one of the more prolific and colourful instrument makers in the renowned nineteenth-century precision instrument trade of Paris. Beginning his career as a violin maker, in 1858 the young Prussian immigrant shifted his talents towards the growing field of acoustics. Altered Sensations is a portrait of his vibrant atelier, a place of construction, commerce and experiment. For over forty years it was also a popular meeting place for scientists, artisans, musicians and teachers. Using archival and collection research from across North American and Europe, David Pantalony has traced the material and social influences of this space on the development of modern acoustics. In particular, he has detailed the manner in which Koenig modified, extended, spread and challenged Hermann von Helmholtz's Sensations of Tone. A large part of the research on Koenig comes from the actual products of his workshop which survive in museums and collections around the world. The second section of Altered Sensations provides a Catalogue Raisonné of Koenig’s entire line of instruments, including their history, details from specific examples, locations, and references in the literature. This catalogue will serve as a practical guide for curators and researchers as well as a comprehensive overview of nineteenth-century acoustical practice.
