Interdisciplinary and Advanced Topics in Science and Engineering, Volume 3: Separation of Flow presents the problem of the separation of fluid flow. This book provides information covering the fields of basic physical processes, analyses, and experiments concerning flow separation. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the flow separation on the body surface as discusses in various classical examples. This text then examines the analytical and experimental results of the laminar boundary layer of steady, two-dimensional flows in the subsonic speed range. Other chapters consider the study of flow separation on the two-dimensional body, flow separation on three-dimensional body shape and particularly on bodies of revolution. This book discusses as well the analytical solutions of the unsteady flow separation. The final chapter deals with the purpose of separation flow control to raise efficiency or to enhance the performance of vehicles and fluid machineries involving various engineering applications. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

This volume contains 37 contributions in which the research work is summarized which has been carried out between 1984 and 1990 in the Priority Research Program "Physik abgeloster Stromungen" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Society). The aim of the Priority Research Program was the inten sive research of the whole range of phenomena associated with separated flows. Physi cal models as well as prediction methods had to be developed based on detailed experi mental investigations. It was in accordance with the main concept of the research program that scientists working on problems of separated flows in different technical areas of application participated in this program. The following fields have been represented in the program: aerodynamics of wings and bodies, aerodynamics of auto mobiles, turbomachinery, ship hydrodynamics, hydraulics, internal flows, heat exchan gers, bio-fluid-dynamics, aerodynamics of buildings and structures. In order to concentrate on problems common in all those areas the emphasis of the program was on basic research dealing with generic geometric configurations showing the fundamental physical phenomena of separated flows. The engagement and enthusiasm of all participating scientists are highly appreciated. The program was organized such that all researchers met once a year to report on the progress of their work. Special thanks ought to go to Prof. E. A. Muller (Gottingen), Prof. H. Oertel jun. (Braunschweig), Dr. W. Schmidt (Dornier), Dr. H. -W. Stock (Dornier) and Dr. B. Wagner (Dornier), who had the functions of referees on those annual meetings.

High Speed Flow Separation Ahead Of Finite Span Steps written by Louis G. Kaufman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Turbulence categories.

Detailed surface heat transfer data, oil flow, and schlieren photographs are presented for high speed flow separation ahead of finite span, forward facing steps on flat plates. Step spans were varied from three to ten times as large as the step height, and the step heights are three to four times larger than the undisturbed turbulent boundary layer thickness. Reynolds numbers, based on plate length, were approximately 15 million for both Mach 4.75 and Mach 5.04 local undisturbed flows over the flat plate surface. For these test conditions, the maximum extent of separation ahead of the step is approximately 4.4 times as large as the step height independent of step span, and peak heating rates were measured that are more than six to eight times larger than the undisturbed flow heating rates. Peak heating on the plate surface occurs slightly upstream and approximately 1/2 step height inboard of the outboard sides of the steps; the increase in peak heat transfer coefficients over the undisturbed flow values decreases with increasing step span. In addition to presenting the detailed surface heat transfer data, a plausible theoretical analysis is presented for calculating the region of turbulent boundary layer separation ahead of these finite span steps.

Boundary-layer separation from a rigid body surface is one of the fundamental problems of classical and modern fluid dynamics. The major successes achieved since the late 1960s in the development of the theory of separated flows at high Reynolds numbers are in many ways associated with the use of asymptotic methods. The most fruitful of these has proved to be the method of matched asymptotic expansions, which has been widely used in mechanics and mathematical physics. There have been many papers devoted to different problems in the asymptotic theory of separated flows and we can confidently speak of the appearance of a very productive direction in the development of theoretical hydrodynamics. This book will present this theory in a systematic account. The book will serve as a useful introduction to the theory, and will draw attention to the possibilities that application of the asymptotic approach provides.

The purpose of the report is to extend previous analytical work of the authors to colder walls by including a term of higher order in the assumed total temperature profile. The analysis is developed for both flat-plate-wedge and cylinder-flare configurations. The effect of this higher order term on the theoretical critical temperature ratio, found in the earlier work for separation of the free-interaction type, is discussed. At the beginning of interaction the boundary layer is assumed to be of the Blasius type and the flow at the edge of the boundary layer throughout the interaction is assumed to be isentropic. Comparisons between the theoretical calculations and experiments are presented for both two-dimensional and axisymmetric configurations. The ratio of wall temperature to free-stream stagnation temperature varies from 1.0 to 0.2. The agreement between the theoretical and experimental pressure distributions is considered good. A comparison between theoretical and experimental heat-transfer distributions indicates only fair agreement.

Two-Dimensional Separated Flows provides a systematic presentation of the theory of separated flow around bodies. The main classes of aerodynamic problems of plane-parallel flow around bodies are described, and the steady aerodynamic, unsteady aerodynamic, and statistical characteristics of a trailing wake are determined. Numerical methods based on the synthesis of models for non-viscous incompressible flow and boundary layer, algorithms, examples, and systematic comparisons are presented. The book also includes numerical results for the problem of separated flow around fixed, oscillating, and rotating cylinders, in addition to results for separated flow around an aerofoil over a wide range of angles. Two-Dimensional Separated Flows will benefit researchers and students studying aerodynamics, aircraft dynamics, aeroelasticity, and the aerodynamics of building structures.

The IUTAM Symposium on Boundary-Layer Separation, suggested by the UK National Committee of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and supported by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, was held at University College London on August 26-28, 1986. The proposed theme and scope of the Symposium were designed to help to bring about the necessary interaction between experimentalists, computationalists and theoreticians for the furthering of understanding in this challenging subject. The talks and discussions were aimed at representing the very wide range and application of separating-flow phenomena, which often substantially affect the whole of fluid dynamics at medium to large Reynolds numbers, covering in particular both laminar and turbulent flow, steady or unsteady, two- or three-dimensional, small or large-scale, incompressible or compressible, external or internal, from the experimental, computational and theoretical standpoints. It was intended that about 80 scientists would participate in the Symposium, with about 25 talks being delivered, to which poster sessions with 8 contributions were added subsequently. All the speakers and poster presenters were selected by the scientific committee, although two late replacements of speakers were required. Fruitful discussions, well led by the session chairmen, took place formally after each talk and after the poster sessions and informally on other occasions including the social events. The present proceedings of the Symposium appear to reflect much of the current state of experimental, computational and theoretical work and progress in boundary-layer separation. We hope that they provide also ideas, questions and stimulation, in addition to major recent developments.

Current knowledge and understanding of the fluid physics of 2D and 3D flow separation and reattachment, particularly for turbulent flows, is limited. It is necessary that high quality, carefully planned 2D and 3D boundary layer experiments be conducted to obrain dependable experimental data to enhance our basic knowledge, and for use in verification, validation and development of theoretical prediction methods. These complete, unambiguous data sets should include detailed documentation of all measurable quantities, both mean and fluctuating, at the wall, in the viscous boundary layer and in the external flowfield. Emphasis should be placed on redundant measurement techniques to ensure high data reliability. (Author).
