The book describes examples of separations as an opportunity for transformation and healing. These include early experiences from the author’s personal life, such as missing her absent father as a four year old, and how she found a way to cope; once she moved to the United States she pursued a personal search for meaning, mostly spiritual, in unexpected places: during a vision quest, the World Trade Center after September 11, a bungee jump in New Zealand, learning & teaching how to walk a Labyrinth, becoming a Spiritual Director, Skydiving, serving as an auxiliary mounted police officer in New York’s Central Park, becoming a pilot. Later, her personal experiences and training helped her understand and connect with patients, who shared their lives during visits. As a chaplain, the author learned quickly that one cannot easily fix other peoples’ problems but can walk alongside them in their longing to heal and perhaps even discover their own spiritual potential. From these experiences, the readers learn that there are surprising benefits to facing physical, mental, emotional or spiritual distress in life. They may also discover the possibility to heal and even to reach a higher spiritual level when they understand, they are not alone.

In this 2010 book, Roger Masterman examines the dividing lines between the powers of the judicial branch of government and those of the executive and legislative branches in the light of two of the most significant constitutional reforms of recent years: the Human Rights Act (1998) and Constitutional Reform Act (2005). Both statutes have implications for the separation of powers within the United Kingdom constitution. The Human Rights Act brings the judges into much closer proximity with the decisions of political actors than previously permitted by the Wednesbury standard of review and the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty, while the Constitutional Reform Act marks the emergence of an institutionally independent judicial branch. Taken together, the two legislative schemes form the backbone of a more comprehensive system of constitutional checks and balances policed by a judicial branch underpinned by the legitimacy of institutional independence.

This book contains articles authored by rabbis, mental health professionals and scholars on several sensitive and controversial topics in Judaism. The first half of the book deals with the extreme standards of sexual modesty and gender separation in the haredi, Gur Hasidim and Neturei Karta communities and the psychological and sociological ramifications. Also included are the views and reactions of rabbis and mental health practitioners regarding the issue of therapists treating patients of the opposite sex. In the second half of the book, the issue of homosexuality is discussed: How should one view homosexuality, how should the religious community relate to homosexuals in general and religious homosexuals in particular - and the issue of psychological treatment of homosexuals. Included also is a responsa (religious ruling) by a prominent rabbi regarding "couple" therapy with a suicidal homosexual. I believe that mental health practitioners, rabbis as well as the lay public will find the book interesting, informative and a worth while read. (Frumi Gottlieb, M.S.W.)

The separation of powers is an important principle of liberal constitutionalism. However, the traditional rationale behind institutional separation can no longer govern the distribution of authority in the modern state. This book develops a new model of the separation of powers theory for the administrative state. It argues for the replacement of the traditional theory with a new model which has the potential to both enhance democratic checks and balances and to legitimise the role of administrative and regulatory bodies in the modern state. Explaining how developments in modern governance have subverted the principles originally underpinning the separation of powers, the book identifies the ways in which lawyers and administrators have sought to preserve these democratic principles in particular areas. These piecemeal efforts are gathered together into a cohesive account of a radical overarching framework for institutional reform. Drawing on examples from the United Kingdom, Ireland and the U.S.A., the book provides both a descriptive and prescriptive analysis of the ways in which our legal and political notions of institutional separation have so far, and (more importantly) may, in the future, deal with the problems posed by the emergence of quasi-public administrative or regulatory agencies. Far from the traditional view of administrative agencies as a threat to democracy, administrative bodies, in fact, can provide a valuable opportunity for reforming public governance in a way which reinforces the foundational principles of democracy.

This analysis of five exemplary domestic plays—the anonymous Arden of Faversham and A Warning for Fair Women (1590s), Thomas Heywood’s A Woman Killed with Kindness (1607), Thomas Middleton’s Women Beware Women (ca. 1613), and Walter Mountfort’s The Launching of the Mary, or The Seaman’s Honest Wife (1632)—offers a new approach to the emerging ideology of the private and public, or what Ann C. Christensen terms “the tragedy of the separate spheres.” Feminist scholarship has identified the fruitful gaps between theories and practices of household government in early modern Europe, while work on the global Renaissance attends to commercial expansion, cross-cultural encounters, and colonial settlements. Separation Scenes brings these critical concerns together to expose the intimate and disruptive relationships between the domestic culture and business culture of early modern England. Separation Scenes argues that domestic plays make the absence of husbands for business the subject of tragedy by focusing not on where men traveled but on whom and what they left behind. Elements that critics have rightly associated with domestic tragedy—adultery, sensational murders, and the lavishly articulated operations of domestic life—define this world, which, Christensen argues, was equally shaped by the absence of husbands. Her interpretations of these domestic plays invite us to historicize and further complicate the seemingly universal binary between a feminine “private sphere” and a masculine “public sphere.” Separation Scenes demonstrates how domestic drama played an active, dynamic, and critical role in deliberating the costs of commercial travel as it disrupted domestic conduct and prompted realignments within the home.

Source Separation And Decentralization For Wastewater Management written by Tove A. Larsen and has been published by IWA Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-01 with Science categories.

Is sewer-based wastewater treatment really the optimal technical solution in urban water management? This paradigm is increasingly being questioned. Growing water scarcity and the insight that water will be an important limiting factor for the quality of urban life are main drivers for new approaches in wastewater management. Source Separation and Decentralization for Wastewater Management sets up a comprehensive view of the resources involved in urban water management. It explores the potential of source separation and decentralization to provide viable alternatives to sewer-based urban water management. During the 1990s, several research groups started working on source-separating technologies for wastewater treatment. Source separation was not new, but had only been propagated as a cheap and environmentally friendly technology for the poor. The novelty was the discussion whether source separation could be a sustainable alternative to existing end-of-pipe systems, even in urban areas and industrialized countries. Since then, sustainable resource management and many different source-separating technologies have been investigated. The theoretical framework and also possible technologies have now developed to a more mature state. At the same time, many interesting technologies to process combined or concentrated wastewaters have evolved, which are equally suited for the treatment of source-separated domestic wastewater. The book presents a comprehensive view of the state of the art of source separation and decentralization. It discusses the technical possibilities and practical experience with source separation in different countries around the world. The area is in rapid development, but many of the fundamental insights presented in this book will stay valid. Source Separation and Decentralization for Wastewater Management is intended for all professionals and researchers interested in wastewater management, whether or not they are familiar with source separation.
