Syekh Amongraga mengembara dari timur hingga Gunung Lawu. Di sana ia menyebarkan ajarannya ke penduduk sekitar. Hingga sesampainya di Giri Bangun (Karanganyar), ia melakukan tapa dan mendapat julukan Ki Ageng Lemahbang oleh penduduk sekitar. Perjalanannya berlanjut menuju Sampar Paliyan (Gunungkidul) dan melakukan tirakat di Goa Songpati. Sementara itu, tiga kerabat Wanamarta yakni Jayengresmi, Jayengraga, dan Kulawirya mengembara mencari Syekh Amongraga. Mereka singgah di Desa Kempleng. Di desa ini Jayengraga dan Kulawirya terbuai oleh nafsunya hingga melakukan perbuatan tercela. Perjalanan mereka berlanjut ke Gunung Kelothok, lalu singgah di Desa Pulung. Di desa ini kembali Jayengraga dan Kulawirya mengulangi perbuatannya. Bagaimana kisah perjalanan mereka?

Sultan Agung mendengar ada seorang yang dianggap durjana mengaku sebagai Syekh menyebarkan ajaran yang tak sesuai syariat agama tengah bertapa di dekat Pantai Selatan. Orang yang dimaksud tak lain adalah Syekh Amongraga. Sultan Agung mengutus Tumenggung Wiraguna untuk menangkap Syekh Amongraga dan dihukum larung di Pantai Selatan. Namun hal ini justru menjadi sarana pelepasan Syekh Amongraga menuju ke kesejatian.

Sua putra Ki Bayi Panurta bersama kerabat Wanamarta mengembara mencari Syekh Amongraga yang pergi dan meninggalkan duka mendalam bagi Niken Tambangraras. Pengembaraan secara diam-diam ini ternyata mengantarkan mereka berkunjung kepada Ki Demang Kidang Wiracapa, yang tak lain adalah sahabat lama Ki Bayi Panurta. Di sana mereka disambut secara istimewa dan diberikan berbagai ilmu luhur. Salah seorang putri pejabat dari Trenggalekwulan bernama Rara Widuri tergila-gila kepada Jayengraga dan meminta dinikahkan dengan lelaki pujaannya itu. Pesta pernikahan pun digelar besar-besaran di rumah Ki Demang Kidang Wiracapa. Kisah pada pesta ini diwarnai dengan tingkah polah Kulawirya dan Jayengraga yang berbuat semaunya. Hendak kembali ke tujuan semula, rombongan meninggalkan Lembuasta secara diam-diam, yang membuat Rara Widuri menjadi gila karena ditinggalkan Jayengraga. Hingga akhirnya mereka kembali pulang ke Wanamarta atas saran dari Syekh Ekawardi yang mereka temui di Desa Gubug.

Atas kehendak Hyang Agung, Syekh Amongraga dan Ni Selabrangta berhasil melalui cobaan ini. Datuk Ragarunting terkena akibat dari perbuatannya. Bertahun-tahun kemudian Syekh Amongraga meminta dua adik iparnya, Jayengresmi dan Jayengraga kembali ke Wanamarta. Mereka pun kembali ke Wanamarta bersama para istri, diikuti oleh sahabat-sahabat Ki Bayi Panurta. Dengan kembalinya kedua putra dan ketiga sahabatnya, Sakit Ki Bayi Panurta pun sembuh. Kerinduan Ki Bayi dan Ni Malarsih pun terobati. Pada akhirnya, Syekh Amongraga kembali bersatu dengan Ni Selabrangta atau Niken Tambangraras, hidup bahagia selamanya dan selalu bersama-sama. Bahkan di kehidupan setelahnya, suksma Amongraga dan Ni Selabrangta menitis ke dalam putra Sultan Agung dan putri Pangeran Pekik yang sudah ditakdirkan untuk berjodoh dan menurunkan para raja di tanah Jawa.

The Scope of the Work The main purpose of this work is to give a critical edition of a Javanese text - the Serat Cabolek - together with an Introduction, an English trans lation of the text, and Notes. The present publication is a slighdy revised version of a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Australian National Univer sity in 1967. The Introduction to the text begins with a brief description of each of the extant MSS of the Serat Cabolek to be found in the Manuscript Sections of the Jakarta Museum Library and the Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia and in the Griental Manuscripts Section of the Leiden University Library. In addition, a description is given of a printed version of the Serat Cabolek. The eleven MSS and the printed text are compared with one another on the points of form, structure and content, in order to discover their mutual relationship. From this comparison it becomes clear that no matter how much these eleven MSS and the printed text of theSerat Cabolek may differ the one from the other, they all share a common core and all ultimately derive from a single source. The kernel of the Serat Cabolek in all probability comprised only the following sections: (1) the story dealing with the trial of Haji Mutamakin by the Kartasura tribunal; (2) the teaching of Dewa Ruci to Bhima; and (3) a commentary on Dewa Ruds counsel to Bhima.
