Sergei Arsenievich Vinogradov (1869-1938, Riga) was a Russian Impressionist painter; known for landscapes, genre scenes and interiors. His father was a rural priest. From 1880 to 1889, he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture with Illarion Pryanishnikov, Vladimir Makovsky and Vasily Polenov, who had a major influence on his style. In 1888, he was awarded the title of "Artist". The following year, he transferred to the Imperial Academy of Arts; studying with Bogdan Willewalde and Carl Wenig. After graduating he went to Kharkiv to teach at a trade school. He returned to Moscow in 1896 and found work providing illustrations for the publisher Alexei Stupin. In 1896, he became a teacher at the Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry (a position he would hold until 1913). Two years later, he began exhibiting with the Peredvizhniki. In 1903, he became one of the founders of the "Union of Russian Artists". He was named an "Academician" in 1912 and became a member of the Academy in 1916.During World War I, he lived in Gurzuf at a dacha owned by Konstantin Korovin. While there, he focused on painting military scenes and designing posters. After the war, he helped to decorate the Moscow Kremlin, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution. In 1923, he helped organize a travelling exhibition of Russian art and accompanied the exhibition to its first showing in New York. Upon his return, he settled in Riga, where he initially taught at the studios of Nikolai Bogdanov-Belsky, then established his own private school.Although he concentrated on landscapes at that time, he also worked in other genres; notably a series of portraits depicting the priests at Nativity Cathedral. In the early 1930s, he wrote a series of memoirs about the pre-revolutionary Russian art scene, which was published in Segodnya.

Reclaiming And Redefining American Exhibitions Of Russian Art written by Roann Barris and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-23 with Art categories.

This book examines the history of American exhibitions of Russian art in the twentieth century in the context of the Cold War. Because this history reflects changes in museological theory and the role of governments in facilitating or preventing intercultural cooperation, it uncovers a story that is far more complex than a chronological listing of exhibition names and art works. Roann Barris considers questions of stylistic appropriations and influences and the role of museum exhibitions in promoting international and artistic exchanges. Barris reveals that Soviet and American exchanges in the world of art were extensive and persistent despite political disagreements before, during, and after the Cold War. It also reveals that these early exhibitions communicated contradictory and historically invalid pictures of the Russian or Soviet avant-garde. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies, and Russian studies.

Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoi (1837-1887) was a Russian painter and art critic. He was an intellectual leader of the Russian democratic art movement in 1860-1880.Kramskoi came from an impoverished petit-bourgeois family. From 1857 to 1863 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts; he reacted against academic art and was an initiator of the "revolt of fourteen" which ended with the expulsion from the Academy of a group of its graduates, who organized the Artel of Artists.Influenced by the ideas of the Russian revolutionary democrats, Kramskoi asserted the high public duty of the artist, principles of realism, and the moral substance and nationality of art. He became one of the main founders and ideologists of the Company of Itinerant Art Exhibitions (or Peredvizhniki). In 1863-1868 he taught at the drawing school of a society for the promotion of applied arts. He created a gallery of portraits of important Russian writers, scientists, artists and public figures (Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy, 1873, Ivan Shishkin, 1873, Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, 1876, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, 1879, Sergei Botkin, 1880) in which expressive simplicity of composition and clarity of depiction emphasize profound psychological elements of character. Kramskoi's democratic ideals found their brightest expression in his portraits of peasants, which portrayed a wealth of character-details in representatives of the common people. In one of Kramskoi's most well known paintings, Christ in the Desert (1872, Tretyakov gallery), he continued Alexander Ivanov's humanistic tradition by treating a religious subject in moral-philosophical terms. He imbued his image of Christ with dramatic experiences in a deeply psychological and vital interpretation, evoking the idea of his heroic self-sacrifice.Aspiring to expand the ideological expressiveness of his images, Kramskoi created art that existed on the cusp of portraiture and genre-painting ("Nekrasov during the period of 'Last songs,'" 1877-78; "Unknown Woman," 1883; "Inconsolable grief," 1884; all in Tretyakov gallery). These paintings disclose their subjects' complex and sincere emotions, their personalities and fates. The democratic orientation of Kramskoi's art, his acute critical judgments about it, and his persistent quest for objective public criteria for the evaluation of art exerted an essential influence on the development of democratic art and aesthetics in Russia in the last third of the nineteenth century.

Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany's (American, 1848-1933) extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, New York, completed in 1905, was the epitome of Tiffany's achievement and in many ways defined this multifaceted artist. Tiffany designed every aspect of the project inside and out, creating a total aesthetic environment. This publication accompanies an exhibition that reveals Tiffany's most personal art, bringing into focus this remarkable artist who lavished as much care and creativity on the design and furnishing of his home and gardens as he did on all the wide-ranging media in which he worked. Although the house tragically burned to the ground in 1957, many of its surviving architectural elements and interior characteristics are included in this volume. Also featured are Tiffany's personal collections of his own work-breathtaking stained-glass windows, paintings, glass and ceramic vases-as well as the artist's collections of Japanese, Chinese, and Native American works of art. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
