Hamengku Buwono IX merupakan figur fenomenal. Selama ini ia lebih dikenal sebagai tokoh kultural. Perannya di bidang politik dan ekonomi kerap tenggelam. Padahal, sepak terjangnya sebagai penyokong kaum republiken tak pernah henti. Hanya dalam tiga hari, Sultan menyatakan Yogyakarta bergabung ke dalam Republik Indonesia. Ketika Belanda mengklaim bahwa Republik Indonesia telah mati, Raja Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat itu berhasil mematahkan tuntutan tersebut. “Langkahi mayat saya dahulu,” kata Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX kepada Jenderal Meijer yang hendak mengacak-acak keraton. Itu terjadi pada Serangan Umum 1 Maret 1949. Ia tak segan berbeda jalan dengan sahabatnya, Sultan Hamid II yang membangun konfrontasi terhadap Republik Indonesia. Hamengku Buwono IX juga berperan besar dalam pembangunan ekonomi Inodnesia. Pada awal pemerintahan Orde Baru, ia membangun fondasi ekonomi pemerintahan. Sebagai Menteri Negara Bidang Ekonomi, Keuangan, dan Industri, ia memimpin delegasi berkeliling ke mancanegara, mengundang pengusaha global untuk menanam modal di Indonesia. Raja Jawa yang bernama kecil Gusti Raden Mas Dorodjatun ini memiliki karakter yang merupakan paduan nilai Timur dan Barat. Soe Hok-gie adalah seorang pemikir yang kritis, idealis, dan pemberontak. Gie pernah mendebat guru bahasa Indonesia lantaran berbeda pendapat soal pengarang prosa “Pulanglah Dia si Anak Hilang”. Lalu semasa SMA, ia memprotes kebijakan sekolahnya yang hanya menampung siswa dengan orangtua dari kalangan pejabat. Tabiat itu membentuknya menjadi manusia berjiwa politik. Empati kepada rakyat kecil dan keterampilan beretorika menjadi seManga, Manhua & Manhwat utama Gie. Ia konsisten untuk berada di luar sistem serta memihak kemanusiaan dan kebebasan. Dalam tulisannya bertanggal 10 Desember 1959, misalnya, Gie geram menyaksikan orang makan kulit mangga saking kelaparan. Sementara, ia menduga, tak sampai dua kilometer dari situ, Presiden Sukarno sedang tertawa dan makan-makan dengan para istrinya. Gie sangat dikenang berkat tulisan-tulisannya. Aktivis Mapala Universitas Indonesia yang meninggal pada 16 Desember 1969 saat mendaki puncak Semeru ini berprinsip, “Lebih baik diasingkan daripada menyerah pada kemunafikan.” Kisah tentang Gie adalah jilid perdana seri “Pemuda dan Gerakan Sosial” yang diangkat dari liputan khusus Majalah Berita Mingguan Tempo Oktober 2016. The character of the last Tsar, Nicholas II (1868-1918) is crucial to understanding the overthrow of tsarist Russia, the most significant event in Russian history. Nicholas became Tsar at the age of 26. Though a conscientious man who was passionate in his devotion to his country, he was weak, sentimental, dogmatic and indecisive. Ironically he could have made an effective constitutional monarch, but these flaws rendered him fatally unsuited to be the sole ruler of a nation that was in the throes of painful modernisation. That he failed is not surprising, for many abler monarchs could not have succeeded. Rather to be wondered at is that he managed, for 23 years, to hold on to power despite the overwhelming force of circumstances. Though Nicholas was exasperating, he had many endearing qualities. A modern audience, aware - as contemporaries were not - of the private pressures under which he lived, can empathise with him and forgive some of his errors of judgement. To some readers he seems a fool, to others a monster, but many are touched by the story of a well-meaning man doing his best under impossible conditions. He is, in other words, a biographical subject that engages readers whatever their viewpoint. His family was of great importance to Nicholas. He and his wife, Alexandra, married for love and retained this affection to the end of their lives. His four daughters, all different and intriguing personalities, were beautiful and charming. His son, the family's - and the nation's - hope for the future, was disabled by an illness that had to be concealed from Russia and from the world. It was this circumstance that made possible the nefarious influence of Rasputin, which in turn hastened the end of the dynasty. This story has everything: romance and tragedy, grandeur and misery, human frailty and an international catastrophe that would not only bring down the Tsar but put an end to the glittering era of European monarchies.

This book is the first work that comprehensively presents the accounts of Lia Eden, a former flower arranger who claims to have received divine messages from the Archangel Gabriel and founded the divine Eden Kingdom in her house in Jakarta. This book places Lia Eden’s prophetic trajectory in the context of diverse Indonesian spiritual and religious traditions, by which hundreds of others also claimed to have been commanded by God to lead people and to establish religious groups. This book offers a fresh approach towards the rich Indonesian religious and spiritual traditions with particular attention to the accounts of the emergence of indigenous prophets who founded some popular religions. It presents the history of prophetic tradition which remains alive in Indonesian society from the colonial to reform period. It also explores the ways in which these prophets rebelled against two hegemonies: colonial power in the past and Islamic orthodoxy in the present. The discussion of this book focuses on Lia Eden including her biography, claims to prophethood and divinity, the development of her group Eden Kingdom, her challenge to Islamic orthodoxy under the banner of the MUI (Indonesian Ulama Council), her persecution by radical groups, her experiences in court trials and imprisonment, and public responses to her emergence.
