Serious as a Heart Attack is a comedic memoir about the time I dropped dead of a heart attack. Well, obviously I didn't actually drop dead or I wouldn't be here to tell you about it. And they tell me I didn't technically have a heart attack either. But that's alright, it's not meant to be an historical memoir, it's an hysterical memoir, and it's a drop-dead laugh riot. The story begins the day I told my boss I would be a couple hours late so I could stop by the doctor "to get this thing checked out" and yada, yada, yada had immediate emergency open-heart surgery. The story then diverges in time, going forward through recovery while reflecting back on my life and what led me to this fateful cardiological crossroads. Through a year of medical consultations, clinical trials and some post-graduate research I come to learn that (spoiler alert!) fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.Turns out I was a walking cardiological time bomb my entire life leading up to that fateful day. I grapple with addressing or accepting each risk factor as I go through recovery and emerge a skinnier, sexier, healthier version of myself than I had ever been.

In a gritty thriller from the acclaimed author whom William Vollmann called "a real storyteller," a street-smart young woman takes what looks like an easy job and ends up having to solve a murder case -- before the next body that turns up is her own. Queenie Sells is having what she thinks is a good day. After getting fired from her job at a calendar company for botching Daylight Savings, she is informally hired by a wealthy acquaintance to track down his girlfriend, a stripper named Trigger Happy. But Queenie's seemingly good luck turns hard when she finds Trigger dead in her apartment. Now Queenie's daily routine of being a drunk smart-ass is put on hold as she becomes both a suspect for the murder and the target for an unknown predator. Hopping from bar to bar, from Coney Island clam stands to the Waldorf-Astoria, she inadvertently lands on the trail of Trigger's killer and puts herself in the line of fire. Along the way she meets Rey, a private eye with a soft spot for tough-talking ladies; Detective Olds, the stuttering cop who thinks Queenie's the culprit; and a dozen New York denizens, among them a cult recruiter, a hit man, a thief, and even Rip Torn -- some strange, some sad, some sweet, and some deadly, every one dropping in and out of Queenie's life as she searches for each fragile piece of the puzzle that may eventually lead her to the truth. With danger closing in on her, Queenie can't help but realize the precariousness of her own mortality. As she stares out of the window at an old lady on the corner, she thinks, "There is nothing separating you from that old lady right now -- maybe something, maybe time is all, but that's really nothing when you think about it." After all, thinks Queenie, it's just days. But unless she can find the killer before the killer finds her, Queenie's days are seriously numbered.

The Heart Disease Breakthrough written by Thomas Yannios and has been published by Turner Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-24 with Health & Fitness categories.

What even your doctor may not know about the real heart attack risk factors and what you can do to prevent heart disease now. You count your cholesterol, monitor your fat and sodium consumption, and get regular exercise. But consider these facts: Many people who have heart attacks have cholesterol counts below 200. Low-fat diets can actually raise the heart attack risk in some people. And the wrong kind of exercise can do your heart more harm than good. Now for the good news: You can do something about it, and this book shows you how. Recent research has revealed that the real risks are a combination of factors that you-and your doctor-may never have heard of, including the crucial differences between cholesterol types and much, much more. In The Heart Disease Breakthrough, Thomas Yannios, M.D., explains the state-of-the-art medical research and the science behind the latest breakthroughs in testing, diagnosis, nutrition, and exercise. And he presents a clear, easy-to-follow 10-step program for counteracting your individual risk factors and attaining optimum heart health. "For those seriously concerned a with preventing heart disease, this is your guide: detailed, current, strongly worded guidelines. Yannios. . . isn't interested in cushioning the facts or the remedies in a feel-good framework. . . . Guidelines are set out here involving diet, weight control, exercise, and medication. Yannios doesn't let readers off easily, but that doesn't mean he can't offer realistic help: for instance, practically every cardiac risk factor can be countered by exercise; it just has to be the right type of exercise. Heart disease prevention is among the fastest-advancing medical research areas, with new, often conflicting recommendations being published daily. For those at serious risk, this is an understandable, serious, and worthwhile approach." - Kirkus Reviews

Too Young For A Heart Attack written by Stu Segal and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-01 with Health & Fitness categories.

Stu Segal was a fit, healthy 37-year-old—or that's what he thought until Fathers' Day 1987 ended with a heart attack. When the ER doctor told him he might or might not survive, he realized that, one way or another, life as he knew it was over. Stu traces the journey of a man facing the new reality that though much of what he loved was gone, yes, he might still be able to live a long and happy life—if he methodically changed his approach to the things he'd always taken for granted. Over the course of weeks, months and years, Stu says goodbye to the habits he's used to and rebuilds them all from the ground up—his work, his eating, his physical activities, even his hobbies and relationships. And along the way, he learns that happiness isn't exactly what he thought it was.Readers seeking heart-health advice will find Too Young for a Heart Attack includes a top-10-healthy-practices list, a food appendix featuring heart-friendly recipes, and medical expertise from cardiologist Ian J. Molk, M.D.FROM THE AUTHOR: I had a heart attack, out of the blue, at age 37. It was serious—serious enough to change the rest of my life in ways I couldn't imagine. It's been 26 years since the heart attack. I have lived, loved, laughed—in spite of the heart attack. Or is it because of the heart attack? Hard to say, but over time it awakened my desire to live and revealed my love of life. It gave me the motivation to stop my unhealthy behaviors, the eating, the smoking, the stressing . . . the behaviors that surely precipitated the crisis. Prior to the heart attack I never truly recognized the risks of these behaviors. I was thin and had always been thin. I didn't need to exercise or watch what I ate to stay that way. And you know, thin is healthy—just ask anyone. My diet included absolutely no vegetables—if it was green, it wasn't going in my mouth. I loved anything sugary—Frosted Flakes, Pop Tarts, Boston cream pie, Tastykakes. And let's not forget Italian salami, capicola, steaks . . . and hot pastrami sandwiches, calzones, strombolis. Reading in bed at night, I always had candy bars and milk. Never any asparagus or broccoli here! And I smoked—a lot, two packs a day, and had been for over 20 years. I knew it was harmful, but figured it wouldn't hurt me, not until I was older . . . and I planned to stop . . . someday . . . before it was too late.Whether it was what I ate, or smoked, or stressed over, there was no moderation—stuffing the freezer with a years supply of cookies seemed perfectly normal to me. When I liked something, I really liked it; and when I didn't, I avoided it like the plague. Unfortunately, allowing my indulgences (bad diet, smoking, stress) and avoiding my dislikes (exercise, healthy eating) was the perfect formula for a heart attack. Which left me with a damaged heart, forevermore.Nearly three decades later I can tell you I have lived an amazing life, though in the aftermath of the heart attack I believed it was destined to be an unfulfilling life, a life of restrictions, the life of a cardiac cripple. It has not been without adversity, conflict, depression and setbacks . . . but in the end I beat the odds. I have lived a life many would envy—seeing my children flourish, my career advance, my personal relationships blossom. This is the story of my journey from the depths of doubt, doubt that I could live, or live fully, to the summit of a life well-lived. From a reckless personal lifestyle which damaged my health, nearly stopped my heart, to an effective, satisfying way of life which halted the advance of heart disease and improved my overall health and well-being. More than just my story, I want to share with you some of the thought processes, techniques and tactics that helped change my life, that put me on the path to better health . . . and that I hope will put you on that same path.
