Los veinticuatro sermones de este quinto volumen de los Sermones parroquiales fueron predicados en su mayoría en los años 1838-1840. Este periodo coincide plenamente con las primeras experiencias que acabaron conduciendo a Newman a la Iglesia católica. En efecto, el estudio de las controversias de la Iglesia primitiva, en el verano de 1839, le hicieron concebir, si bien aún no aceptar plenamente, la idea de que el Anglicanismo era insostenible. El predicador de los sermones de este tomo andaba, pues, inmerso en una especie de dicotomía interior que no traslucía al exterior. Los temas de estos sermones son más bien morales que doctrinales, y el mensaje fundamental que transmite a sus oyentes contribuye a llevarlos más bien hacia la Iglesia antigua que hacia la Iglesia de Inglaterra. El tono general es probablemente menos polémico que otras veces, precisamente porque el predicador se siente próximo a un estado de búsqueda y espera.
