At length, my brethren, the Advent season has reached its close, and we are at Christmas eve. The period of expectation is over, and we are almost entering upon the early hours of that great and blessed festival on which the Christian Church keeps the birthday of her Founder; the day upon which He whom Christendom names the Saviour of the world was born of a human mother and entered this world to take His place among the things and scenes of Time. The Apostle's words to Timothy put before us forcibly and concisely the great master-truth which gives Christmas its meaning Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh. It is not the birthday Of a mere Sage and Philanthropist, which we celebrate to-morrow. That might be in itself reasonable and natural enough; but Christmas means much more than that. Christmas means the entrance into the human world of One who was at once its Architect and its Judge, under conditions which made Him the peer Of the poorest and youngest amongst us. It is the introduction of a new principle of life - into humanity which we thus commemorate. It is in fact nothing less than a new starting point in the world's history. Excerpt from St. Paul's Cathedral as a Witness for Christ: A Sermon Preached in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 1880 Of what kind or character was the first cathedral that stood on this site we know little or nothing. It was pro bably what would seem to us a small and rude structure, fitted to the wants of those who built it, corresponding to the ideas of beauty and suitability entertained at the time; and possibly regarded by the men of the period when it was erected with as much reverence and affection as is felt by us towards the glorious building in which we are now assembled. What is really known about it is that 'when this province received the word of truth by the preaching of Mellitus, King Ethelbert built the Church of St. Paul in the city of London, where he and his successors should have their episcopal see and that London, the metropolis of the province of the East Saxons, was 'the mart of many nations resorting to it by sea and land.'1 To attain to this character at the beginning of the seventh century was easier than it would now be; and it is probable that we should look upon the London that then was as little more than a village or small town. But from what the chronicler says it is clear that it was a most important matter for Christ to have a witness in the cathedral church of this mart of commerce, and that it would attract the notice, and we hope lead to the conversion of many, of the heathen people amongst whom it was placed.
