If we "come to God," for the purpose of worship, we "must believe that he is;" and we cannot come to him aright, without knowing what he is, or what the perfections which he possesses. It is, therefore, of the greatest importance to obtain a right knowledge of his character; and this is what is affirmed by "the faithful and true witness" in the words of our text. Our Lord asserts that "it is eternal life" to know the only true God - that is, it is the means, the way, the sure and only way to eternal life: - that there is a connexion between the right knowledge of the only true God, and the attainment of eternal felicity, of which, indeed, this knowledge furnishes the true Christian with the beginning and the earnest. Let us here consider, 1. The glorious objects of saving knowledge; and, 2. The connexion of this knowledge with eternal life. I. Martin Luther’s collected sermons for the church year were originally called postil or postilla (in German: Postille) which was originally a term for Bible commentaries. It is derived from the Latin "post illa verba textus" (after these words) referring to Biblical readings. Luther's postil was published in two series: the Church Postil and the House Postil. His published sermons and catechisms were by far his most popular. They did more to teach people the Reformation than any other book. Luther intended his postils to serve common pastors and people, and therefore was one of the greatest educational and devotional books of the Reformation. From the time Martin Luther published the first part in 1521, every annual cycle of sermons on the lessons, whether consisting of homilies or formal sermons, is termed a postil. This unabridged edition of Luther's writings of the works of Martin Luther is an accurate and clear translation. We have Presents the Church Postil as the mature Luther wanted it to be. It includes Luther’s extensive revisions to his own work. For those who are not familiar with the Church calendar year we have elected to number and title each sermon accompanied with a short description of the contents accompanied by the Bible verse. Tabernacle Sermons VOLUME 3 The Gospel Of The Kingdom A bookdealing with endtime prophecy. Beginning in 1886 A.B. Simpson began publishing a series of books called "Tabernacle Sermons." These books contained messages that he had preached in the Gospel Tabernacle, New York City, New York and subsequently published in eleven volumes. These books are reprints of their original volumes. Spelling was modernized in a few places, and where there were obvious errors in the text (one or two), comparisons were made to later editions of the books to keep the author's intent.
