“Serre’s Conjecture”, for the most part of the second half of the 20th century, - ferred to the famous statement made by J. -P. Serre in 1955, to the effect that one did not know if ?nitely generated projective modules were free over a polynomial ring k[x ,. . . ,x], where k is a ?eld. This statement was motivated by the fact that 1 n the af?ne scheme de?ned by k[x ,. . . ,x] is the algebro-geometric analogue of 1 n the af?ne n-space over k. In topology, the n-space is contractible, so there are only trivial bundles over it. Would the analogue of the latter also hold for the n-space in algebraic geometry? Since algebraic vector bundles over Speck[x ,. . . ,x] corre- 1 n spond to ?nitely generated projective modules over k[x ,. . . ,x], the question was 1 n tantamount to whether such projective modules were free, for any base ?eld k. ItwasquiteclearthatSerreintendedhisstatementasanopenproblemintheshe- theoretic framework of algebraic geometry, which was just beginning to emerge in the mid-1950s. Nowhere in his published writings had Serre speculated, one way or another, upon the possible outcome of his problem. However, almost from the start, a surmised positive answer to Serre’s problem became known to the world as “Serre’s Conjecture”. Somewhat later, interest in this “Conjecture” was further heightened by the advent of two new (and closely related) subjects in mathematics: homological algebra, and algebraic K-theory.

Besides giving an introduction to Commutative Algebra - the theory of c- mutative rings - this book is devoted to the study of projective modules and the minimal number of generators of modules and ideals. The notion of a module over a ring R is a generalization of that of a vector space over a field k. The axioms are identical. But whereas every vector space possesses a basis, a module need not always have one. Modules possessing a basis are called free. So a finitely generated free R-module is of the form Rn for some n E IN, equipped with the usual operations. A module is called p- jective, iff it is a direct summand of a free one. Especially a finitely generated R-module P is projective iff there is an R-module Q with P @ Q S Rn for some n. Remarkably enough there do exist nonfree projective modules. Even there are nonfree P such that P @ Rm S Rn for some m and n. Modules P having the latter property are called stably free. On the other hand there are many rings, all of whose projective modules are free, e. g. local rings and principal ideal domains. (A commutative ring is called local iff it has exactly one maximal ideal. ) For two decades it was a challenging problem whether every projective module over the polynomial ring k[X1,. . .

Random Fields And Geometry written by R. J. Adler and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-29 with Mathematics categories.
This monograph is devoted to a completely new approach to geometric problems arising in the study of random fields. The groundbreaking material in Part III, for which the background is carefully prepared in Parts I and II, is of both theoretical and practical importance, and striking in the way in which problems arising in geometry and probability are beautifully intertwined. "Random Fields and Geometry" will be useful for probabilists and statisticians, and for theoretical and applied mathematicians who wish to learn about new relationships between geometry and probability. It will be helpful for graduate students in a classroom setting, or for self-study. Finally, this text will serve as a basic reference for all those interested in the companion volume of the applications of the theory.

Foundations Of Commutative Rings And Their Modules written by Fanggui Wang and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-02 with Mathematics categories.
This book provides an introduction to the foundations and recent developments in commutative algebra. A look at the contents of the first five chapters shows that the topics covered are those usually found in any textbook on commutative algebra. However, this book differs significantly from most commutative algebra textbooks: namely in its treatment of the Dedekind–Mertens formula, the (small) finitistic dimension of a ring, Gorenstein rings, valuation overrings, the valuative dimension, and the Nagata rings. Chapter 6 goes on to present w-modules over commutative rings, as they are most commonly used in torsion theory and multiplicative ideal theory. Chapter 7 deals with multiplicative ideal theory over integral domains. Chapter 8 collects various results of pullbacks, especially Milnor squares and D + M constructions, which are probably the most important example-generating machines. In Chapter 9, coherent rings of finite weak global dimensions are probed, and the local ring of weak global dimension two is elaborated by combining homological tricks and methods of star operation theory. Chapter 10 is devoted to the Grothendieck group of a commutative ring. In particular, the Bass–Quillen problem is discussed. Finally, Chapter 11 introduces relative homological algebra, especially where the related notions of integral domains appearing in classical ideal theory are defined and studied using the class of Gorenstein projective modules. In Chapter 12, in this new edition, properties of cotorsion theories are introduced and show, for any cotorsion pair, how to construct their homology theory. Each section of the book is followed by a selection of exercises of varying difficulty. This book appeals to a wide readership, from graduate students to academic researchers interested in studying commutative algebra.

Derived Category Methods In Commutative Algebra written by Lars Winther Christensen and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-04 with Mathematics categories.
Derived category methods entered commutative algebra in the latter half of the 1960s, providing, among other things, a framework for a clear formulation of Grothendieck’s Local Duality Theorem. Since then, their impact on the field has steadily grown and continues to expand. This book guides readers familiar with rings and modules through the construction of the associated derived category and its triangulated functors. In this context, it develops theories of categorical equivalences for subcategories and homological invariants of objects. The second half of the book focuses on applications to commutative Noetherian rings. The book can be used as a text for graduate courses, both introductory and advanced, and is intended to serve as a reference for researchers in commutative algebra and related fields. To accommodate readers new to homological algebra, it offers a significantly higher level of detail than most existing texts on the subject.

Modern Methods In The Calculus Of Variations written by Irene Fonseca and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-22 with Science categories.
This is the first of two books on methods and techniques in the calculus of variations. Contemporary arguments are used throughout the text to streamline and present in a unified way classical results, and to provide novel contributions at the forefront of the theory. This book addresses fundamental questions related to lower semicontinuity and relaxation of functionals within the unconstrained setting, mainly in L^p spaces. It prepares the ground for the second volume where the variational treatment of functionals involving fields and their derivatives will be undertaken within the framework of Sobolev spaces. This book is self-contained. All the statements are fully justified and proved, with the exception of basic results in measure theory, which may be found in any good textbook on the subject. It also contains several exercises. Therefore,it may be used both as a graduate textbook as well as a reference text for researchers in the field. Irene Fonseca is the Mellon College of Science Professor of Mathematics and is currently the Director of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests lie in the areas of continuum mechanics, calculus of variations, geometric measure theory and partial differential equations. Giovanni Leoni is also a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. He focuses his research on calculus of variations, partial differential equations and geometric measure theory with special emphasis on applications to problems in continuum mechanics and in materials science.

Algebraic Cobordism written by Marc Levine and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-02-23 with Mathematics categories.
Following Quillen's approach to complex cobordism, the authors introduce the notion of oriented cohomology theory on the category of smooth varieties over a fixed field. They prove the existence of a universal such theory (in characteristic 0) called Algebraic Cobordism. The book also contains some examples of computations and applications.
