O presente livro tem como objetivo desconstruir e reconstruir a forma de olhar para o envelhecimento, um tema premente e cada vez mais relevante na sociedade dos dias de hoje, sistematizando informação sobre as políticas públicas e analisando a ação do Ser¬viço Social neste campo de intervenção. Baseada numa metodo¬logia orientada por abordagens qualitativas e interpretativas, res¬peitando assim a dimensão humana que caracteriza o tema, foram realizadas entrevistas a testemunhos relevantes, tais como assis¬tentes sociais, dirigentes e deputados da Assembleia da República, não esquecendo os próprios idosos. Conclui-se que, aquando da sinalização social, a pessoa idosa pode responder de forma bastante diversa, demonstrando reações que vão desde o alívio, a aceitação, a vergonha, o medo, a revolta e a resistência, dependendo do tipo de isolamento auto percecionado, assim como do tipo de isolamento que efetivamente ocorre (físico, psíquico, económico e social). Uma das maiores preocupações que as equipas técnicas e assisten¬tes sociais têm no acompanhamento a pessoas idosas sinalizadas, é o respeito pela sua singularidade, procurando a igualdade de opor¬tunidades das respostas sociais disponíveis. Conclui-se ainda que apesar de existir um esforço progressivo na elaboração e execução de politicas publicas mais ajustadas à ter¬ceira idade, a verdade é que em Portugal ainda existe um percurso bastante longo na procura de uma melhor concertação entre a aca¬demia, a prática e o poder legislativo na intervenção social junto deste segmento da população.
