Service-Learning has proved to be a powerful and practical methodology and tool with far-reaching implications. Benefits have included increased civic engagement, enhanced sense of purpose, greater feeling of fulfillment, nurtured creativity, and promotion of problem-solving skills and social responsibility as traditional classrooms have moved to the communities and students have become service providers and learners. The papers in this book span a good part of the globe and cover a wide application spectrum, from health care, business administration, nursing, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy to gerontology and food service. Extended models and prototypes explored include community engaged learning, long-distance learning, and the bridge between older and younger students. In addition to current perspectives and numerous revealing case studies with local communities and international service-learning projects, thirty chapters and a reflection paper are devoted to documenting lessons learning, assessing service-learning programs, identifying new challenges, and tapping into the emerging paradigms in service-learning.

This book provides a new, empirically informed framework designed to equip higher education faculty with the tools to help students engage in humanizing, mutually beneficial, and anti-colonial experiential education alongside other students and communities around the world. The author maps the conceptual development of culturally responsive experiential education (CREE) as a novel framework, situated at the nexus of culturally responsive research methodologies, the Indigenous research paradigm, critical service learning, and critical pedagogy in experiential education. The chapters detail qualitative research findings from an undergraduate CREE program in rural Fiji to illustrate the implementation of the novel CREE framework and discuss post-program possibilities based on the research study findings. Situated in narrative inquiry, the book also includes interspersed participant vignettes in order to center student voices and illuminate the research study findings. With attention to themes including emergent critical consciousness, critical allyship, and personal journeys of decolonization as experienced through the CREE framework, it will be of benefit to both education scholars and higher education faculty interested in experiential education and culturally responsive pedagogies.

How does one assess community service, civic engagement, and the impact of service learning on a college campus? This volume reviews contemporary research, measurement instruments, and practices in the assessment of civic engagement in higher education, including: meta-analyses of students, faculty, institutions, and higher education systems at-large, targeted case studies of campus-specific practices at individual institutions, efficient and effective ways to gauge the influence of civic engagement on higher education policy, practices, and outcomes, and quantitative and qualitative approaches to measuring the effort, importance of, and impact of students’ and institutions’ involvement in community service, community engagement, civic engagement, and service learning on a college campus. The research ranges between decisions made either as part of institutional agendas, curricular enhancements, or student life initiatives and student and professor involvement in civic engagement activities and supportive attitudes. This is the 162nd volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.
