The behavior of concrete and prestressed concrete bridges under chloride-aggressive environments during their service life is influenced not only by load (especially fatigue forces) but also by the corrosion environment. At present, the research of working performance and life prediction of bridges mainly focuses on the role of force or takes a single parameter as failure criterion, such as chloride ion concentration and steel bar depassivation. In this article, the service life prediction model of concrete and prestressed concrete bridges subjected to chloride-aggressive environments and fatigue is established, and the interaction of environmental effects and fatigue is taken into full account based on the mechanism of heat and mass transfer in porous media, the metal corrosion theory, and the classical mechanics theory. Taking depassivation as a demarcation point, the calculation method for the service life of concrete and prestressed concrete bridges is developed by analyzing the service life evolution process and determining the failure criterion. The service life of concrete bridges in coastal areas is calculated by the self-compiled program with MATLAB software (MathWorks, Natick, MA), and the results show good agreement with those in the project example. According to the results of the service life calculation with different increments of the number of fatigue loading cycles, ?N, the increment of the number of fatigue loading cycles ?Nhas an influence of no more than 5 % on the service life. This indicates that the calculation is converged and stable and that the calculation results are reliable. The service life of bridges is shortened with the increase of surface chloride concentration of concrete, daily vehicle traffic volume and load level, and the decrease of the concrete cover thickness. The study results are referred to predict the service life of concrete and prestressed concrete bridges under chloride-aggressive environments.

While numerous advanced statistical approaches have recently been developed for quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, the methods are scattered throughout the literature. Statistical Methods for QTL Mapping brings together many recent statistical techniques that address the data complexity of QTL mapping. After introducing basic genetics topics and statistical principles, the author discusses the principles of quantitative genetics, general statistical issues of QTL mapping, commonly used one-dimensional QTL mapping approaches, and multiple interval mapping methods. He then explains how to use a feature selection approach to tackle a QTL mapping problem with dense markers. The book also provides comprehensive coverage of Bayesian models and MCMC algorithms and describes methods for multi-trait QTL mapping and eQTL mapping, including meta-trait methods and multivariate sequential procedures. This book emphasizes the modern statistical methodology for QTL mapping as well as the statistical issues that arise during this process. It gives the necessary biological background for statisticians without training in genetics and, likewise, covers statistical thinking and principles for geneticists. Written primarily for geneticists and statisticians specializing in QTL mapping, the book can also be used as a supplement in graduate courses or for self-study by PhD students working on QTL mapping projects.

The deterioration of the nation's highway infrastructure is proceeding at an alarming rate. A major element of the problem involves chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete bridge components. In order to rationally implement bridge management strategies, it is generally recognized that life-cycle cost analyses of viable alternatives are required. This necessitates the development of reliable means for predicting the service lives of alternative procedures. The major components of a rational model for predicting service life in this scenario center on the time for the chloride ion concentration to reach the corrosion threshold level at reinforcement locations and the corrosion reaction time necessary to produce loss of serviceability. Obviously, the definition of the terminal serviceability in terms of deterioration level also constitutes an important element of the model. This paper examines a semi-empirical deterioration model for predicting service life based on fundamental concepts, augmented with historical data.

Relevant advances have been accomplished by the scientific community and engineering profession in the design, assessment, monitoring, maintenance, and management of sustainable and resilient bridge structures and infrastructures. These advances have been presented and discussed at The Sixth International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety And Management (IABMAS 2012), held in Stresa, Italy, from 8 to 11 July 2012 (http://www.iabmas2012.org). IABMAS 2012 has been organised on behalf of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance And Safety (IABMAS) under the auspices of Politecnico di Milano. This book collects the extended versions of selected papers presented at IABMAS 2012 and invited papers originally published in a Special Issue of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering. These papers provide significant contributions to the process of making more rational decisions in bridge design, assessment, monitoring and maintenance. The editors would like to thank the authors for their contributions and hope that this collection of papers will represent a valuable reference for scientific research and engineering applications in the fields of design, assessment, monitoring, and maintenance of bridges and infrastructure networks.

Time Variant Reliability Of Reinforced Concrete Bridges Under Environmental Attack written by Michael Patrick Enright and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Bridges categories.

In the United States, life-cycle cost analysis is gradually becoming a requirement for bridge design, inspection, repair and replacement decisions. Bridges are designed to function over long periods of time, but can experience changes in both resistance and applied loads which are time-variant. Current reliability-based codes for buildings and bridges are largely limited to individual structural component checks, and do not consider the potential damaged states of a structural system and the ability of the damaged system to continue to carry loads. Furthermore, current codes do not entail the prediction of the failure time of deteriorating structural systems under time-varying loads. Although the need for the application of time-variant system reliability methods to bridge life-cycle cost prediction is becoming increasingly recognized in the U.S., most reliability studies on reinforced concrete bridges do not consider the time dependence of the resistance or post-failure behavior of bridge elements. In this study, the time-variant system reliability of reinforced concrete highway girder bridges subjected to time-dependent load and resistance is investigated. The approach, which is based on combining adaptive importance sampling and numerical integration, is suitable for predicting the reliability of reinforced concrete bridges under environmental stressors such as corrosion. The effects of corrosion initiation time and rate on time-variant strength of reinforced concrete beams are illustrated using Monte Carlo simulation. An existing reinforced concrete T-beam bridge located near Pueblo, Colorado, is investigated. A comparison of reliability estimates for several system models is given, including the influence of correlation among initial girder strengths. Post-failure behavior of components and load redistribution effects are also considered. The influence of inspection updating on time-variant system failure probability is illustrated using Bayesian-based numerical integration. Optimal inspection/repair strategies are included which are based on minimum lifecycle cost within prescribed reliability constraints. The results can be used as a guide for the selection of system models for bridge reliability analysis, identification of critical girders in a bridge system, and for the development of optimal reliability-based maintenance strategies for reinforced concrete highway bridges.

This report presents a study on estimating the service life cycle of reinforced concrete bridge components exposed to chloride-laden environments. Current treatment options are identified and an opinion survey was used to obtain first estimates of service life. To estimate the service life of untreated and rehabilitated bridge decks, data from 52 bridge decks distributed in different environmental conditions were collected. Models estimating the service life of untreated and rehabilitated bridge decks were developed and compared with models developed based on historical data and the time-to-rehabilitate model.
