Bullying, perhaps the most underrated problem in America's schools today, distracts minds and inhibits the learning process; if left unchecked, it can destroy lives and place society at risk. Bullying is defined as one or more individuals inflicting physical, verbal, or emotional abuse upon another individual or individuals. Subliminal abuses related to bullying--such as being teased, intimidated, or intentionally excluded or ostricized--can create fear, anxiety, and pain tantamount to that resulting from physical abuse. In fact, fear of other students motivated 1 of every 12 student dropouts. This book, divided into two sections and four chapters, examines the bullying problem and defines solutions. Chapter 1 discusses the serious and widespread bullying phenomenon; highlighted is the escalation of the problem, if ignored. Chapter 2 pinpoints bully and victim characteristics, causes, and manifestations; permanent scars for the victim and a gloomy future for the bully are predicted. Chapter 3 suggests heightened public awareness to generate support for handling the antisocial bullying phenomenon and chapter 4 explores the intervention strategies of educator action, parental action, and student action. A list of resources is included, and the appendices contain both a student and an adult bully awareness survey. (102 references) (KM)

There was a time when bullying was regarded as a relatively innocuous issue—a normal part of growing up—but this is no longer the case. The magnitude of the problems that bullying can lead to is evidenced by the rising amount of professional literature on bullying, as well as recent cases of bully-linked suicide and homicide in the popular media. Bullying always involves at least one bully and one victim, but there are a variety of social roles that can affect the duration and magnitude of bullying. These roles include bully assistants or supporters, victim defenders, and passive bystanders. Fundamental to creating successful intervention programs to prevent or reduce bullying is basic research that identifies the characteristics of those involved in bullying situations (e.g., personality, motivational, intellectual, physical, social, and behavioural). This volume presents a broad range of original research describing how social influences are related to bullying. Reflecting the fact that bullying is a world-wide phenomenon and problem, the research comes from samples of individuals from Australia, Finland, Italy, New England, and Poland, as well as a review of the cyber-bullying literature, which is international in scope. This book was originally published as a special issue of Social Influence.

Scope of Study:This dissertation examines the impact of an anti-bullying program on the prevalence of bullying in junior and senior high school. Three research questions were posed: Will an anti-bullying program reduce the prevalence of bullying in Junior (Grades 7-9) and Senior High (Grades 10-12) school? Will the program be more effective at the Junior or Senior High school level? Are there gender issues related to the effectiveness of the program (i.e., do males or females benefit more from the implementation of the program)? Findings and Conclusions: Data collected and analyzed to address the above questions suggest that the anti-bullying program was ineffective in reducing the prevalence of bullying at the junior and senior high school level. The treatment group at St. Bernard's School did not show any statistically significant changes when compared to the control group at Jacques Fontaine School. When grade was analyzed in the treatment group as a factor on the impact of the program, in all but one of the questions examined, there was little in the way of statistical significance to report. In the one question where significance was observed, students at the grade 10-12 level reported a lower level of bullying than their grade 7-9 counterparts. In addition, when gender was examined in the treatment group as a factor on the impact of the anti-bullying program, no statistical significance was observed. Thus, it would appear the anti-bullying program chosen for this study was ineffective in reducing the prevalence of bullying in junior and senior high school students.
