In Christian churches, the “Why Lord?” and “How long Lord?” prayers of the Jewish lament tradition have fallen silent. This is astonishing given that Jesus’ fidelity to the cause of God culminates in his lament cry on Calvary, which was “heard” by God (Heb 5:7), who did not hide his face (Ps 22:24) but responded by raising him up in glory. In Christ’s paschal mystery, grief (lament) and joy (praise) are inextricably intertwined. So why is lament not incorporated into praise in church usage? How can we not lament as we strive to embody Christ in an unredeemed world? The book examines reasons for the neglect of lament in the New Testament and theological tradition. The pivotal section of the work situates Jesus in the tradition of the suffering righteous in which Psalm 22 stands and it proposes a theological (not juridical) interpretation of Jesus’ cry, which refutes the God-abandonment thesis: Jesus’ cry reveals his abandonment to God, not his abandonment by God! Because God was “for” and “with” Jesus, we know that God is “for” and “with” us in our own cries, which are joined to Jesus’ cry, and we are redeemed. Redemption, then, consists in human and divine suffering coming together to transform grief and evil into joy and newness of life.

The practice of prayer and meditation in modern Western Christianity is rooted in the Eastern tradition of early Church prayer as well as the wisdom of early Church fathers. In Centering Prayer, M. Basil Pennington, the author of the highly acclaimed Daily We Touch Him, returns to these roots, offering contemporary Christians a new approach to ancient prayer forms. Pennington combines the best of the Eastern spiritual exercises (such as the Jesus Prayer) with a spirituality for today's world. Addressing the obstacles that discourage people from praying well, he explains how to relax for prayer, how to listen to and be directed by the Other, and how to handle the pain and distractions that can stifle attempts to communicate with God. Centering Prayer has sold more than a quarter million copies since it was first published in 1982. In this eminently practical book, simple, inspiring instructions will help readers find the comfort and the guidance they seek through prayer.

Faith can lose its priority in a person's life, especially given how identities are established today. Reactivating Our Catholic Faith raises questions about the myths that people often use to distract themselves from dealing with the central issues of their lives. Eight reflective essays utilize short meditations, discussion questions, and follow-up suggestions-derived from the scriptures and based upon the meaning and purpose behind key Catholic teachings and practices-as a concise and practical guide to assist the individual to reconnect, re-prioritize, and reactivate their Catholic faith. Examining questions about human meaning, our need for salvation, the personal place Jesus has in our lives, and how we can connect with Jesus authentically-this book makes the Catholic faith accessible, especially for young adults and parents. In Job, one of the godliest men who ever lived, God shows us first that no saint is exempt from suffering. Second, he teaches us that because the faith of his children is precious to him, he throws it in the roaring fires of affliction, to remove its impurities and to reveal its heavenly quality. Third, and when we ask God why, his answer is, "For My glory." Armed with these three truths, we can face suffering with confidence in our Father's wisdom and love, overcome the world by faith that looks to the power of Jesus Christ in us, and endure the fires by holding fast to his promises.

The Learning Church series offers a range of short introductions to some of the key themes of Christian theology, life and discipleship. This book will introduce some major Christian beliefs and values, such as creation, Christian hope and death in the context of the claim that the world and its human inhabitants are the work of God. The discussion throughout will start with the readers own experience and understanding, before relating insights from the Bible and the Christian tradition to this more ordinary and experiential starting point, and suggesting how the ensuing dialogue may develop.
