I would that all could have been present at this, the greatest and grandest of all the national meetings ever held under the au- spices of our Society. While this, of course, could not be, we realize that to the prayers for the convention's success sent up by many of those who were prevented by various reasons from being in attendance, a great share of the blessings which attended the meetings was due. It is therefore the object of this printed report to attempt to compensate, in a small degree, those who were absent, for their loss, by presenting to them an account, (brief and faulty though it be) of all that was done at Chicago. May it yield to all a blessing and may the perusal of its page furnish to all its readers a small portion at least of the inspiration and encouragement our delegates received, and may a more thorough study of its contents tend to make God's presence as near and real to all as it was to those who were present at the convention in Chicago. The National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) held its 7th Annual Conference in 1997 with a theme of Daring to Educate for Equity and Excellence: A Multicultural and Bilingual Mandate for the 21st Century. The conference generated scholarship in the form of keynote speeches and conference papers and stimulating discussions among the membership. The conference's southwest location of Albuquerque, New Mexico provided an excellent back drop to discuss the interconnections between multicultural education and bilingual education, as well as provide an opportunity for proponents of both of these important ideas to engage in useful and important discussions. The essays comprised in this book capture much of the written record of the conference. They convey ideas, beliefs, and research findings that were presented at the formal sessions at the conference. Just as with NAME's previous proceedings, it is expected that these proceedings will become not only a written record of the conference but a "live curriculum" to help pre/K through college educators to prepare themselves and those they teach for the 21st century.

The Seventh Annual Seminar of Canadian-American relations held at the University of Windsor brought together a number of distinguished participants, representing such interested groups as labour, business, and research, to discuss planning. The result is this volume which brings together some of the contributors to discuss this important and controversial area of Canadian-American relations. The noted economist Harry G. Johnson begins by defining planning in the Canadian-American context as "the general process of attempting to take stock of the present situation and its evolving trends, predict the general direction of future developments, assess these in the light of generally accepted social and economic goals, and where necessary formulate programs and policies designed to shape future developments as closely as possible to conform to what is considered to be in the social interest." He then identifies several promising areas for joint planning, including the liberalization of trade, the use of energy, the use of water resources, and the organization of transportation. Subsequent papers on official and business planning echo the approach outlined in Dr. Johnson's definition, and stress the need for vision based on discernment of where we are and where we are going. These discussions are grouped into the categories Business, Labour, New Areas of Co-operation, Automation, and Technical Change. Finally, Paul Ylvisaker, Director of the Public Affairs Program for the Ford Foundation in New York, under the title "The Human Price of Planning" adds a cogent warning that this future focus, however skilfully it is related to present knowledge, may not be enough, pointing to recent events in the University of California at Berkeley and in Watts, California, as an indication of the importance of being prepared for and receptive to the immediate and unexpected. He suggests that planning for the cities of the future should be the most important concern for Canadian and American planners. By bringing together a variety of viewpoints on some of the most relevant aspects of planning for the future this volume will provoke lively discussion, and provide a useful reference, for all those who will take part in planning for the future, and those who will be affected by it.

Against the background of a long-awaited upturn in its economy performance, the air transport industry in 1995 continues to undergo radical change in structure and regulation. Issues of particular importance in Europe include new or impending developments in the areas of ground handling and state aids, and issues which are attracting significant attention for the first time, such as agreements with the U.S. technical harmonisation, flags of convenience and cross-border ticketing. The Association's annual conference for 1995 returned to London, where its first annual conference was held in 1989, and addressed these issues, as well as others which were current at the time.
