Abstract: Avloppsslam innehåller alla nödvändiga näringsämnen för trädtillväxt och skulle kunna vara ett värdefullt gödselmedel för ökad tillväxt i produktionsbarrskogar i de nordiska länderna. Det skulle möjliggöra en ökning av tillgången på förnyelsebar skogsråvara för industriell förädling och för ersättning av fossila bränslen med trädbiomassabaserade energikällor, och därmed även vara av stor ekonomisk betydelse i denna region av Europa, där skogssektorn svarar för en avsevärd del av samhällsekonomin. En användning av slam som skogsgödsel skulle även minska samhällets kostnader för slamdeponering och förbränning. Andra positiva effekter skulle vara minskad växthuseffekt via ökad kolackumulering i skogsekosystemen, via minskade metanutsläpp från slamdeponier och via minskade nettoutsläpp av koldioxid vid energiframställning, samt ökad återanvändning av näringsämnen från avloppsslam. I denna rapport redovisas en genomgång av forskningsresultat beträffande tillväxt- och miljöeffekter från slamgödsling av barrskog i de nordiska länderna och Nordamerika. Slutsatserna är att det är möjligt att utforma metoder för skogsgödsling med avloppsslam i praktisk skala, som är miljömässigt acceptabla och som kan ge betydande trädtillväxtökningar. Since the 1992 Earth Summit, there have been increased efforts on an international scale to address global climate change. This means that the environmental, economic, social, and political consequences of climate change must be understood, and that strategies to mitigate climate change must also address these issues. The workshop detailed in this book concentrated on how economic principles and analysis could contribute to the planning of forestry projects aimed at affecting terrestrial carbon balances. More than 30 international scientists came together for one week near Stockholm, Sweden and divided into working groups charged with addressing a specific issue and preparing a paper within this time frame.
