Sex Ed Segregated written by Courtney Q. Shah and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with History categories.

In Sex Ed, Segregated, Courtney Shah examines the Progressive Era sex education movement, which presented the possibility of helping people understand their own health and sexuality, but which most often divided audiences along rigid lines of race, class, and gender. Reformers' assumptions about their audience's place in the political hierarchy played a crucial role in the development of a mainstream sex education movement by the 1920s. Reformers and instructors taught middle-class youth, African-Americans, and World War I soldiers different stories, for different reasons. Shah's examination of "character-building" organizations like the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) reveals how the white, middle-class ideal reflected cultural assumptions about sexuality and formed an aspirational model for upward mobility to those not in the privileged group, such as immigrant or working class youth. In addition, as Shah argues, the battle over policing young women's sexual behavior during World War I pitted middle-class women against their working-class counterparts. Sex Ed, Segregated demonstrates that the intersection between race, gender, and class formed the backbone of Progressive-Era debates over sex education, the policing of sexuality, and the prevention of venereal disease. Courtney Shah is an instructor at Lower Columbia College, Washington.

Black Sexual Politics written by Patricia Hill Collins and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Social Science categories.

Caricatures of Black sexuality saturate American popular culture in bootylicious rap videos and paternity tests on the Jerry Springer show. Blacks have been cast as hypersexual animals in Western culture since a scantily clad "Hottentot Venus" was displayed in a cage in Paris in the 1800s. In Black Sexual Politics, one of America's most influential writers on race and gender explores how images of Black sexuality have been used to maintain the color line and how they threaten to spread a new brand of racism around the world today. The ideal of pure white womanhood, Collins argues, required the invention of hot-blooded Latinas, exotic Suzy Wongs, and wanton jezebels -- images that persist in the media today in everything from animal-skin bikinis to the creation of the "welfare mom." Men confront a similar bias in a society that defines African American males as drug dealers, brutish athletes, irresponsible fathers, and rapists. Collins dissects the widespread impact of these distorted messages as she explores African American love relationships, sex in youth culture, interracial romance, sexual violence, and HIV/AIDS. A revolutionary work that touches the intimate and public lives of all African Americans, Black Sexual Politicsbrilliantly illuminates the subtle interplay of race, sex, and politics in American culture today. Racism And Sexual Oppression In Anglo America written by Ladelle McWhorter and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-26 with History categories.

Does the black struggle for civil rights make common cause with the movement to foster queer community, protest anti-queer violence or discrimination, and demand respect for the rights and sensibilities of queer people? Confronting this emotionally charged question, Ladelle McWhorter reveals how a carefully structured campaign against abnormality in the late 19th and early 20th centuries encouraged white Americans to purge society of so-called biological contaminants, people who were poor, disabled, black, or queer. Building on a legacy of savage hate crimes—such as the killings of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd—McWhorter shows that racism, sexual oppression, and discrimination against the disabled, the feeble, and the poor are all aspects of the same societal distemper, and that when the civil rights of one group are challenged, so are the rights of all.

White Men Can't Hump is a book of hope. The hope is that one day Black Men in America will no longer be viewed as unintelligent, unattractive, undesirable, uncivilized, and just plain old worthless. White Men Can't Hump will address why Black Men in America are perceived in such a negative way, and will also explore the origins of this negativity. White Men Can't Hump will also explore how this negativity has been spread for the last four centuries (a la stereotypes), and why this negativity has been spread (a la "Fear of the Black Penis"). Several of these so-called negative Stereotypes will be closely examined and shown in a new light. White Men Can't Hump will ask why two well known Stereotypes that have been historically assigned to Black Men, are only considered negative when applied to Black Men. Most men desire a large Penis and an elevated sexual prowess, but all across America (in offices, bars and locker rooms) the Black Penis and Black Prowess are routinely the Punch Line to jokes. White Men Can't Hump will ask why, and will also ask a question that will create a debate for the ages: "Who's better in bed, Black Men or White Men?" White Men Can't Hump will take you the reader on an educational and enlightening journey through America's past and present with the hope of changing America's future. So sit back and enjoy or cuss, agree or disagree, and most importantly think with an open mind. Because whether you like it or not, White Men Can't Hump tells the story of who all of us are, where we've come from, and where we're going. White Men Can't Hump is divided into two VOLUMES. VOLUME I focuses on how Sex has historically affected Race relations in America, and VOLUME II focuses on how Race has affected Sex relations in America. Don't be confused by the similar titles because both VOLUMES pack a different Sexual, Racial, Political, and Social punch. White Fright written by Jane Dailey and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-17 with History categories.

A major new history of the fight for racial equality in America, arguing that fear of black sexuality has undergirded white supremacy from the start. In White Fright, historian Jane Dailey brilliantly reframes our understanding of the long struggle for African American rights. Those fighting against equality were not motivated only by a sense of innate superiority, as is often supposed, but also by an intense fear of black sexuality. In this urgent investigation, Dailey examines how white anxiety about interracial sex and marriage found expression in some of the most contentious episodes of American history since Reconstruction: in battles over lynching, in the policing of black troops' behavior overseas during World War II, in the violent outbursts following the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education, and in the tragic story of Emmett Till. The question was finally settled -- as a legal matter -- with the Court's definitive 1967 decision in Loving v. Virginia, which declared interracial marriage a "fundamental freedom." Placing sex at the center of our civil rights history, White Fright offers a bold new take on one of the most confounding threads running through American history.

When And Where I Enter written by Paula Giddings and has been published by William Morrow this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Social Science categories.

This book is a testimonial to the profound influence of African-American women on race and women's movements throughout American history. Drawing on speeches, diaries, letters, and other original documents, the author portrays how black women have transcended racist and sexist attitudes - often confronting white feminists and black male leaders alike - to initiate social and political reform. From the open disregard for the rights of slave women to examples of today's more covert racism and sexism in civil rights and women'sorganizations, the author illuminates the black woman's crusade for equality. In the process, she paints portraits of black female leaders, such as anti-lynching activist Ida B. Wells, educator and FDR adviser Mary McLeod Bethune, and the heroic civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, among others, who fought both overt and institutionalized oppression.
