Marli F. Wiener skillfully integrates the history of medicine with social and intellectual history in this study of how race and sex complicated medical treatment in the antebellum South. Sex, Sickness, and Slavery argues that Southern physicians' scientific training and practice uniquely entitled them to formulate medical justification for the imbalanced racial hierarchies of the period. Challenged with both helping to preserve the slave system (by acknowledging and preserving clear distinctions of race and sex) and enhancing their own authority (with correct medical diagnoses and effective treatment), doctors sought to understand bodies that did not necessarily fit into neat dichotomies or agree with suggested treatments. Focusing on Southern states from Virginia to Alabama, Weiner examines medical and lay perspectives on the body through a range of sources, including medical journals, notes, diaries, daybooks, and letters. These personal and revealing sources show how physicians, medical students, and patients--both free whites and slaves--felt about vulnerability to disease and mental illnesses, how bodily differences between races and sexes were explained, and how emotions, common sense, working conditions, and climate were understood to have an effect on the body. Physicians' authority did not go uncontested, however. Weiner also describes the ways in which laypeople, both black and white, resisted medical authority, clearly refusing to cede explanatory power to doctors without measuring medical views against their own bodily experiences or personal beliefs. Expertly drawing the dynamic tensions during this period in which Southern culture and the demands of slavery often trumped science, Weiner explores how doctors struggled with contradictions as medicine became a key arena for debate over the meanings of male and female, sick and well, black and white, North and South.

This story, as it is the first in a series of three, and the stories that follow will shed light on the life of a man with this addiction and how he copes, fights, and struggles to maintain his sanity, reputation, and family despite the devastation that sexual sin causes. My hope is that this book does not do what other books do which is simply to skim over the problem and provide coping skills that only work on the surface and do not go deeper into the issues men face when battling porn addiction and sexual sin or how they go there. I pray that this book sheds light on the personal struggle, turmoil, and anguish men face who have this disease and what happens when the decisions of men are negatively affected because of this disease. This book is a fictitious look at the struggle men have when they fight their disease and our main character struggles mightily as he fights for his sanity, identity, reputation, and family and based on the title we know that he relapses, but how does he relapse? What happens when he does relapse and finally what are his options after he relapses?Men all over the world as well as their families are paying a steep price because of this disease and the treatment being offered isn't enough. Women are assaulted, raped, and objectified at an alarming rate because of this disease and children are suffering as the porn industry remains a billion dollar industry. Trust me, I know, I too suffer this addiction but I am in recovery and I hope other men get into recovery as well. May this book bring you understanding and direction on what to do if you or someone you know or maybe even someone you love is struggling with porn addiction and/or sexual sin. Maria is one of 14 women lured from Mexico to Seattle, Washington, with the promise of a job, then held by force in a brothel and required to sexually service men 12 hours a day. It is not rare; officials say it is increasing, at least partly due to the billions of dollars it brings in for organized crime. The U.S. State Department estimates 800,000 victims, mostly women and children, are trafficked for sex trade across nations each year and millions more are trafficked within countries - including the U.S., Britain, Spain, and the Netherlands. As a Seattle Times reporter explained when Maria's case hit the news there, the reality is that sex slaves for the most part are young women and teenaged girls who come from almost every one of the world's poorer countries and end up in almost every country where there is a combination of sexual demand and money. But they are also in undeveloped Africa, in prisons internationally, locked in forced marriages, or sold to men by parents. In this book, Parrot and Cummings outline the scope and growth of the sex slave market today and explain the history with various elements - including economic, political, cultural, and religious - that make this trade difficult to fully expose, quell, combat, and shut down. We hear from girls and women around the world describing how sexual enslavement has tortured them physically, emotionally, and spiritually, whether they suffer at the hands of prison guards in Turkey, criminals in Washington, or buyers dealing with parents who sell their daughters for the sex slave trade in Greece, Belgium, or France. The authors also describe national and international efforts and legislation passed or in design to stop sex slavery. Successful countries and regions are spotlighted.
