Sexting is a relatively new area of research among professionals. Current research on the topic outlines the prevalence of sexting among teens and young adults, motivations behind sexting, the possibility of links to poor mental health, legal implications for minors who send nude/seminude photos of themselves to others, social and emotional factors, and sexting’s correlation with other risk behaviors. This body of research still has many gaps, including research regarding the resending of nude/seminude photos of other people without their consent (also known as nonconsensual porn). Little research has been initiated regarding non-consensual porn and current research has contradictive results regarding motivation and prevalence (Eaton, Jacobs, & Ruvalcaba, 2017; Sirianni, 2016). The current study used an online survey of college students aged 18-24 to assess the prevalence of resending a nude or seminude photo/video of someone else without their consent, as well as possible correlates, including ambivalent sexism. Results indicated there was no relationship between ambivalent sexism score and resending nude images/videos without consent. However, results did show that those who had received nude images/videos (consensual or not), were more likely to send nude images/videos (consensual or not). Future research possibilities as well as possible implications for the results of this proposed study are also discussed.

Technology is rapidly advancing, and each innovation provides opportunities for such technology to mesh with the human enactment of physical intimacy or to be used in the quest for information about sexuality. However, the availability of this technology has complicated sexual decision making for young adults as they continually navigate their sexual identity, orientation, behavior, and community. Young Adult Sexuality in the Digital Age is a pivotal reference source that improves the understanding of the combination of technology and sexual decision making for young adults, examining the role of technology in sexual identity formation, sexual communication, relationship formation and dissolution, and sexual learning and online sexual communities and activism. While highlighting topics such as privacy management, cyber intimacy, and digital communications, this book is ideally designed for therapists, social workers, sociologists, psychologists, counselors, healthcare professionals, scholars, researchers, and students.

The recent rise in prevalence and devastation of sexting among young people, as well as its complicated nature and effects, are piquing the interest of modern science and professional practice. There is no universal agreement among researchers on what sexting means, even though they have worked very hard to define it. In this review, we put forth a straightforward theoretical framework for sexting to improve how sexting has been operationalized in earlier studies. Teenagers that engage in sexting (texting plus sex) may do things like send, receive, or forward nude or partially nude photographs via mobile devices. Uncertainty exists around the actual prevalence of sexting among tweens and teens. This might be due to the behavior's overall secrecy, the quick growth of technology, and the absence of a precise definition that takes into account the additional developmental elements (e.g., peak sexual development, impulsivity). Additionally, there is a lack of understanding of the negative effects and elevated risks of sexting for youth, a vulnerable demographic, including shame and guilt, earlier sexual behavior, bullying, incarceration, substance misuse, despair, and suicide. This article's goal is to analyze teenage SEXTING practices by examining contemporary adolescents specific characteristics that may have an impact on the prevalence and consequences of SEXTING behavior. The examinations, intervention, and evaluation required to treat teenagers affected by sexting are explored as well as the implications for nursing practice.

ABSTRACT IDENTIFYING THE MOTIVATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF UNDERGRADUATES WHO SEXT by MACKENZIE BOEHLER May 2017 Advisor: Dr. Matthew Larson Major: Criminal Justice Degree: Master of Science In recent years, sexting has become a controversial topic among legal scholars and behavioral scientists. Research has displayed varying accounts of the prevalence of sexting among young adults and has yet to answer the question of why. This study seeks to understand the characteristics and motivations of young adults who are involved in sexting. A survey of sexting behaviors was administered online at a large urban university. Identifying the factors and influences for a young adult's choice to engage in sexting or not can add much insight to this small body of literature. This study found that predominant indicators of sexting are age, religiosity, relationship status, and peer involvement. Additionally, common motivations for sexting include flirtation/romance, sexual reasons, and self-confidence/self-esteem reasons. Results and implications for the study as well as the need for future research are further discussed.

This book explores young people’s perspectives on risk and harm in youth sexting, specifically privacy violations and unwanted, pressured and coerced sexting. This book engages with key debates, academic literature and evidence, as well as findings of a study into young people’s perceptions of, attitudes toward and experiences of sexting. It challenges predominant assumptions that youth sexting is inherently risky and deviant and sets out the specific contexts in which privacy violations and unwanted sexting occur. It explores the sociocultural contexts underpinning harm, including gender, sexism, sexuality, status and power, and associated constructs of risk and shame, as well as broader youth cultural contexts that create and giving meaning to sexters and sexting practices, particularly related to victim-blaming, social shaming, bullying, harassment and abuse. Finally, it discusses young people’s attitudes and beliefs about interventions to reduce the prevalence of youth sexting. In doing so, the book critically engages with young people’s perspectives in order make practical recommendations for encouraging a ‘digital sexual ethics’ based on rights to bodily and sexual expression, autonomy and integrity, positive bystander intervention, and anti-victim blaming and abuse messages. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of criminology, education, social care, sociology and health. It will also be a valuable resource for those working in educational and social care settings such as sex educators, youth and social workers, youth counsellors and mental health professionals.

Abstract: This content analysis of existing literature explored the concept of sexting and its impact on teens and young adults. The content analysis specifically examined sexting behaviors, the views regarding sexting, the social, physical, and psychological effects, and the intended and unintended consequences of sexting. Thirty studies within the last 7 years were analyzed for content. Results of this content analysis revealed that the most common types of sexting behaviors included sending and receiving nude or semi-nude photos, sending and receiving sexually explicit text messages, and forwarding nude or semi-nude photos or sexually explicit text messages from others. Findings indicated most sexting occurs between the ages of 13 to 26. Ethnic groups including Caucasian, African American, Latino, Asian, Filipino, and individuals of European descent were represented in many of the studies. Implications for social work practice were discussed.

Technology has made so many things possible, including sending romantic messages to someone else via text. Sexting is just a new form of communication that continues to serve our need to tell one another things, but sometimes this can go horribly wrong, especially being of a sexual nature. This book debates the issue of sexting, touching on such topics as the rise of sexting among teens and adults, if it is hurtful to teens, and whether or not sexting is a criminal offense.
