Out of control sexual behavior ñ referred to variously as "sex addiction", "sexual compulsivity", and "hypersexuality", among other terms, has been a controversial and attention-getting issue since it first captured both public and professional attention over 30 years ago. Previous discussions of this behavior have been grounded in conceptualizing it as a pathologized, medical issue on par with substance abuse addictions, or, in backlash, as simply irresponsible behavior indicating weakness in the individual. In keeping with the call from many leaders in the mental health and sexual health areas to move beyond these two polarized conceptualizations of these sexual behavior problems, the authors present a model for working with clients in both group and individual treatment settings. Based on their experience with hundreds of clients, this book provides a comprehensive and practical conceptualization of out of control sexual behavior framed as a sexual health problem within a larger model of human behavior, not a psychiatric or addictive disorder. The book includes step-by-step tools for assessment, treatment planning as well as treatment implementation. It describes a process for professionals to guide clients to define and be accountable for their own personal vision of sexual health as the foundation on which they regain sexual behavior control. The authors provide rich and varied composite case examples based on 20 years of clinical experience that demonstrate clinician sexual health treatment conversations and tools, as well as stories of hope and guidance so essential to individuals wanting to understand how sexual health can be the essential ally in changing their sexual behavior.

The concept of sexual addiction has gained increasing recognition in the academic and healthcare communities since the 1990s. It has also captured the attention of the media, where there has been much debate over whether it can truly be described as an addiction. What is certain is that many people struggle with out of control sexual behaviour, which takes over their lives and has harmful consequences for their relationships, careers and finances. The Routledge International Handbook of Sexual Addiction brings together a comprehensive range of perspectives on sexual addiction from a worldwide selection of scholars and therapists. It sets out to define sexual addiction and to study its causes from a range of different psychological perspectives. A series of presentations of sexual addiction are outlined, including internet sexual addiction and the relationship between paraphilias and sex addiction. The handbook considers both individual and group treatment strategies, drawing on a wide range of approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness and 12-step programmes. The book studies sex addiction in specific populations including women, adolescents and men who have sex with men. Finally, it considers some of the alternative discourses surrounding the concept of sexual addiction. This is the first comprehensive reference book to bring together global viewpoints on advances in research, theory and practice in one volume. This handbook provides an essential guide for academics and students of psychotherapy, counselling, nursing, addiction, sexualities, social work and health and social care, as well as professionals in practice and in training working with sexual addiction and related issues.

Could crystal meth use in the gay community be responsible for a resurgence in the AIDS epidemic? According to recent studies, gay men who use crystal methamphetamine were twice as likely to have unprotected sex as those who did not — and more than three times as likely to be HIV-positive. Crystal Meth and Men Who Have Sex with Men is an unflinching look at this dangerous threat to the gay community, addressing the health and mental health needs of “Tina” users who are lost in a downward spiral of addiction and high-risk sexual behaviors. This vital book is the product of a unique collaboration between the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and researchers, clinicians, and community activists. Crystal Meth and Men Who Have Sex with Men contains the published proceedings of two important community events that took place in 2004 in New York City—“The Crystal Meth-HIV Connection: A Public Forum with Harvey Fierstein” and “Crystal Methamphetamine: Understanding and Treatment an Emerging Health Crisis.” Each article—whether drawn from personal account, research study, or online survey—reinforces the reality for the gay community that wherever crystal meth is, increases in sexual risk behaviors for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are sure to follow. This powerful book will help you to identify, approach, and treat clients who use meth, examing the physical, medical, and psychological effects and consequences of its widespread abuse. Topics addressed in Crystal Meth and Men Who Have Sex with Men include: the medical complications associated with methamphetamine use in HIV-infected patients, including hypertension, hyperthermia, rhabdomyolysis, and stroke the alarming rise in the number of emergency room visits related to crystal meth use the psychiatric consequences of methamphetamine use sexual history taking and screening for sexually transmitted infections creative educational interventions and clinical strategies substance abuse treatment interventions cognitive-behavioral therapy motivational interviewing gay-identified community-based treatment programs “club drugs” and the increase of HIV incidence harm reduction and much more Crystal Meth and Men Who Have Sex with Men is an essential resource for health and mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. "The curriculum provides a vision for chemical dependency treatment I have attempted to address for many years. This looks like an approach that finally meets this need." --Eli Coleman, PhD, Director of the Program in Human Sexuality University of Minnesota The ideal of successful treatment is to maintain abstinence for the rest of the addict's life; yet few treatment programs meet this goal. For many men and women in recovery, sexual behavior linked with drug or alcohol use is the primary reason for relapse. A large number of addicts have sex/drug-linked patterns of combining drugs, such as crystal meth, cocaine, alcohol, and club drugs, with sexual relations. In recovery, they may be unprepared for the dual absence of drug use and sexual relations. Additionally many addicts have past histories of sexual abuse. While great strides have been made in treating women and men suffering from addiction, their sexuality is too often marginalized. When sexuality is not directly and positively addressed in drug and alcohol treatment, it can contribute to treatment failure, relapse, and untold costs in the lives of addicts and their families. Sexual Health in Drug and Alcohol Treatment introduces a pioneering evidence-based curriculum, designed to integrate concepts of sexual health, current sex research, and recent developments in relapse prevention research. Complete with suggested group activities, guided discussions, role plays, and more, the program can reduce the risk of relapse and increase client retention for men and women with sex/drug linked addiction and alcoholism. This curriculum was created by drug and alcohol counselors, sexual health advocates, and sychological/sexological research specialists. Key Features: Helps women and men in recovery identify sexual thoughts and feelings associated with increasing or decreasing risk of relapse Is compatible with all treatment settings, approaches, and clientele Includes pschoeducational material, experiential learning, skill-building exercises, assessments, worksheets, and more Proven to improve client retention and reduce sex/drug linked shame-a common cause of relapse
