Over the past few decades our experience and understanding of human sexuality has changed remarkably. The women's movement, the gay rights movement, and a growing social tolerance for diverse lifestyles - the landscape in which we view human sexuality - has been greatly altered. Cohabitation, experimental relationships, and remarriage after divorce are all practices that scandalize our grandparents but seem normal to our children. Yet, the mainstream Christian Churches appear to have been little more than bystanders in the midst of this revolution. Roman Catholic teaching on sexual and marital morality has not substantially changed since 1968, the date of Paul VI's encyclical on contraception, Humanae Vitae. This book represents an attempt to initiate a meaningful conversation between the institutional Church and the laity about some of the fundamental and concrete issues involving human sexuality and relationships. Drawing upon both their professional expertise and their personal experience, eleven authors invite the hierarchy and the whole community of the Church to reconsider their understanding and appreciation for this vital dimension of human existence. The first part of the book suggests three different ways to approach the understanding of human sexuality, in terms of relationship, spirituality and our bodily existence. Part two examines three critical but frequently neglected experiences of sexuality, that of women, of young persons and of the homosexual community. Part three takes account of how human sexuality has been evaluated in the eyes of the Christian Churches; and part four considers how the Churches might 'embrace' human sexuality in a manner that speaks to contemporary women and men in the context of their lived experience.

This volume, like its companion, Voices of Our Times, collects essays drawn from a series of public conferences held in autumn 2011 entitled “More than a Monologue.” The series was the fruit of collaboration among four institutions of higher learning: two Catholic universities and two nondenominational divinity schools. Laws mandating cooperation with the state’s new sexual orthodoxy are among the leading contemporary threats to the religious freedom of Catholic institutions in the United States. These demand that Catholic schools, health-care providers, or social services cooperate with contraception, cohabitation, abortion, same-sex marriage, or transgender identity and surgeries. But Catholic institutions’ responses seem thin and uninspiring to many. They are criticized as legalistic, authoritarian, bureaucratic, retrograde and hurtful to women and to persons who identify as LGBTQ. They are even called “un-Christian.” They invite disrespect both for Catholic sexual responsibility norms and for religious freedom generally, not only among lawmakers and judges, but also in the court of public opinion, which includes skeptical Catholics. The U.S. Constitution protects Catholic institutions’ “autonomy” – their authority over faith and doctrine, internal operations, and the personnel involved in personifying and transmitting the faith. Other constitutional and statutory provisions also safeguard religious freedom, if not always perfectly. Catholic institutions could take far better advantage of all of these existing protections if they communicated, first, how they differ from secular institutions: how their missions emerge from their faith in Jesus Christ, and their efforts both to make his presence felt in the world today, and to display the inbreaking of the Kingdom of God. Second, they need to draw out the link between their teachings on sexual responsibility and love of God and neighbor. Drawing upon Scripture, tradition, history, theology and empirical evidence, Helen Alvaré frames a more complete, inspiring and appealing response to current laws’ attempts to impose a new sexual orthodoxy upon Catholic institutions. It clarifies the “ecclesial” nature of Catholic schools, hospitals and social services. In Sexuality in the Confessional: A Sacrament Profaned, Stephen Haliczer places the current debate on sex, celibacy, and the Catholic Church in a historical context by drawing upon a wealth of actual case studies and trial evidence to document how, from 1530 to 1819, sexual transgression attended the heightened significance of the Sacrament of Penance. Attempting to reassert its moral and social control over the faithful, the Counter-Reformation Church underscored the importance of communion and confession. Priests were asked to be both exemplars of celibacy and "doctors of souls," and the Spanish Inquisition was there to punish transgressors. Haliczer relates the stories of these priests as well as their penitents, using the evidence left by Inquisition trials to vividly depict sexual misconduct, during and after confession, and the punishments wayward priests were forced to undergo. In the process, he sheds new light on the Church of the period, the repressed lives of priests, and the lives of their congregations; coming to a conclusion as startling as it is timely. Based on an exhaustive investigation of Inquisition cases involving soliciting confessors as well as numerous confessors' manuals and other works, Sexuality in the Confessional makes a significant contribution to the history of sexuality, women's history, and the sociology of religion.
