Passaggi fondamentali che riguardano la vita delle donne e il corpo femminile (comparsa del ciclo mestruale, scelte contraccettive, gravidanza, parto, riproduzione assistita, arrivo della menopausa e fine della possibilità di procreare) sono fenomeni determinati socialmente oltre che biologicamente. Il mancato riconoscimento dell'influenza esercitata dal contesto sociale, culturale e psicologico-affettivo sulla formazione/percezione di questi eventi corporei ha favorito l'eccessiva medicalizzazione degli stessi e ha fatto sì che le definizioni bio-mediche si imponessero sopravanzando la voce delle protagoniste. Occorre quindi un'analisi che, anche attraverso il confronto con culture diverse dalla nostra, metta in luce il carattere sociale di questi eventi e sia in grado di smontare le costruzioni culturali che li plasmano. Così facendo si rimette in discussione il massiccio intervento medico che si vorrebbe basato su dati oggettivi (su una lettura razionale di eventi biologici) e che, invece, è frutto di una lettura riduzionistica radicata nella cultura prima ancora che nella biologia. Da qui la presentazione di studi sul corpo, la de-costruzione dell'interazione medico-paziente in ambito ostetrico-ginecologico, l'analisi della costruzione sociale del parto, delle tecnologie riproduttive e della menopausa, con una prospettiva che pone al centro della scena la competenza delle donne, siano esse quelle che curano o che sono curate.
