The chilling story of the Council for National Policy, the covert group that masterminded the archconservative assault on America's airwaves, its schools, and, ultimately, its democracy The Republican Party's coalition of corporate interests and repressive social conservatism may appear a haphazard marriage of convenience. But in this startling account, award-winning journalist Anne Nelson reveals how the right wing engineered this union to rig the system in favor of fundamentalists and oligarchs hostile to civil liberties and the welfare state, and defend against challenges to their power from below. In 1981, fifty individuals--Republican operatives, evangelical Christians, oil barons, gun lobbyists--founded the Council for National Policy to coordinate strategy. Its participants would channel money and media, and mobilize votes behind the scenes. Membership would be secret. The group wielded a broadcasting empire to flood underserved heartland media markets with its propaganda; funded handpicked colleges to launch radically libertarian ideas; and groomed up-and-coming politicians to promote its cause. As the power of voter data to swing elections became clear, the movement joined the Koch brothers to outmaneuver the Democratic Party in an information arms race--one the Democrats may yet be able to win. With astonishing clarity, Nelson reveals this decades-old web, hiding in plain sight and binding elements of the American ultra-right together. Shadow Network is essential reading in a time of stark and growing threats to our government, its most valued institutions, and our democratic freedoms.

The 2007-08 financial crisis surprised many economists and the public. But how did the crisis come about, why was it so deep, and why has the clean-up been so slow and painful? Many accounts of the crisis focus on renegade activity in marginal financial sectors. Shadow Networks challenges this pervading view and sets out to demonstrate that, far from a dissident branch, the shadow finance that initiated the crisis is tightly networked with, and highly profitable for, bank-based finance. The collapse was not an accident, but baked into the system of finance from the start. Shadow Networks traces the complex web of power that caused crisis and gives vivid descriptions of the actors in the quarter century leading up to 2007 to explain how the now decade-long crisis took shape. Shadow Networks: Financial Disorder and the System that Caused Crisis is a probing examination of the roles of the powerful elite. It traces the networks and institutions that support a finance-focused, market centered model of economy and society from their ascendancy to their surprising resilience in the face of manifest failures.

What spam is, how it works, and how it has shaped online communities and the Internet itself. The vast majority of all email sent every day is spam, a variety of idiosyncratically spelled requests to provide account information, invitations to spend money on dubious products, and pleas to send cash overseas. Most of it is caught by filters before ever reaching an in-box. Where does it come from? As Finn Brunton explains in Spam, it is produced and shaped by many different populations around the world: programmers, con artists, bots and their botmasters, pharmaceutical merchants, marketers, identity thieves, crooked bankers and their victims, cops, lawyers, network security professionals, vigilantes, and hackers. Every time we go online, we participate in the system of spam, with choices, refusals, and purchases the consequences of which we may not understand. This is a book about what spam is, how it works, and what it means. Brunton provides a cultural history that stretches from pranks on early computer networks to the construction of a global criminal infrastructure. The history of spam, Brunton shows us, is a shadow history of the Internet itself, with spam emerging as the mirror image of the online communities it targets. Brunton traces spam through three epochs: the 1970s to 1995, and the early, noncommercial computer networks that became the Internet; 1995 to 2003, with the dot-com boom, the rise of spam's entrepreneurs, and the first efforts at regulating spam; and 2003 to the present, with the war of algorithms—spam versus anti-spam. Spam shows us how technologies, from email to search engines, are transformed by unintended consequences and adaptations, and how online communities develop and invent governance for themselves.

After the breakdown of the Soviet Union new cultural and economic practices emerged out of the fragments of the collapsed state. Exploring economic activities in the Russian Far East, this book focuses on new informal economic practices and non-regulated commercial organizations and seeks to understand the emerging roles of entrepreneurs, organized crime, and the state in post Soviet Russia. Based on anthropological fieldwork in the Russian Far East, especially in the port city of Vladivostok, Holzlehner focuses on large open-air markets, on so-called shuttle traders that cross the Russian-Chinese border on a regular basis to import cheap consumer goods for local markets, and on different organized crime groups, which evolved during the transition period in the Russian Far East. Based on the analysis of social networks and focusing on different qualities of relational ties, the boo proposes a methodological and theoretical apparatus to understand the mechanics and dynamics of informal economic networks more thoroughly.

Bringing hard data to the way we think about entrepreneurial success, this bold call to action draws on the latest scientific evidence to dispel the most pervasive startup myths and light a path to entrepreneurship for those eclipsed by the hype. When you think of a successful entrepreneur, who comes to mind? Bill Gates? Mark Zuckerberg? Or maybe even Jesse Eisenberg, the man who played Zuckerberg in The Social Network? It may surprise you that most successful founders look very different from Zuckerberg or Gates. In fact, most startup origin stories are very different from the famous "unicorns" that have achieved valuations of over $1 billion, from Facebook to Google to Uber. In The Unicorn's Shadow: Combating the Dangerous Myths that Hold Back Startups, Founders, and Investors, Wharton School professor Ethan Mollick takes us to the forefront of an empirical revolution in entrepreneurship. New data and better research methods have overturned the conventional wisdom behind what a successful founder looks like, how they succeed, and how the startup ecosystem works. Among the issues he examines: Which founders are most likely to succeed?Where do the best startup ideas come from? What's the most foolproof way of securing the funding needed to take a company to the next level?Should your sales pitch really be something out of Hollywood? What's the best way to grow and scale your company and create a thriving culture that won't hinder expansion? Mollick argues that entrepreneurship is too important, both for society and for the individuals who start companies, to be eclipsed by the shadows of unicorns. He shows we can democratize entrepreneurship—but only by following an evidence-based approach that puts to rest the false narratives that surround it.

It can feel like we're swimming in a sea of corruption. It's unclear who exactly is in charge and what role they play. The same influential people seem to reappear time after time in different professional guises, pressing their own agendas in one venue after another. According to award-winning public policy scholar and anthropologist Janine Wedel, these are the powerful "shadow elite," the main players in a vexing new system of power and influence. In this groundbreaking book, Wedel charts how this shadow elite, loyal only to their own, challenge both governments'; rules of accountability and business codes of competition to accomplish their own goals. From the Harvard economists who helped privatize post-Soviet Russia and the neoconservatives who have helped privatize American foreign policy (culminating with the debacle that is Iraq) to the many private players who daily make public decisions without public input, these manipulators both grace the front pages and operate behind the scenes. Wherever they maneuver, they flout once-sacrosanct boundaries between state and private. Profoundly original, Shadow Elite gives us the tools we need to recognize these powerful yet elusive players and comprehend the new system. Nothing less than our ability for self-government and our freedom are at stake.

Six months after exposing Director Jung, Ji-soo stumbles upon "The Maestros" – a shadow organization weaponizing K-pop's global influence through embedded frequencies designed to manipulate millions. When Eclipse's Bangkok performance triggers unexpected resistance, The Maestros abruptly cancel their tour and subject the group to sinister "re-harmonization" protocols. As Ji-soo races to rescue Eclipse from a hidden "wellness facility," she discovers the horrifying truth – her own father helped create the very technology now being used against them. Who's really pulling the strings? When HALO fans worldwide begin detecting the manipulation, they transform from spectators to soldiers in a war they barely understand. The Maestros' influence reaches government offices, entertainment companies, and broadcasting stations – nowhere is safe. How students get the materials they need as opportunities for higher education expand but funding shrinks. From the top down, Shadow Libraries explores the institutions that shape the provision of educational materials, from the formal sector of universities and publishers to the broadly informal ones organized by faculty, copy shops, student unions, and students themselves. It looks at the history of policy battles over access to education in the post–World War II era and at the narrower versions that have played out in relation to research and textbooks, from library policies to book subsidies to, more recently, the several “open” publication models that have emerged in the higher education sector. From the bottom up, Shadow Libraries explores how, simply, students get the materials they need. It maps the ubiquitous practice of photocopying and what are—in many cases—the more marginal ones of buying books, visiting libraries, and downloading from unauthorized sources. It looks at the informal networks that emerge in many contexts to share materials, from face-to-face student networks to Facebook groups, and at the processes that lead to the consolidation of some of those efforts into more organized archives that circulate offline and sometimes online— the shadow libraries of the title. If Alexandra Elbakyan's Sci-Hub is the largest of these efforts to date, the more characteristic part of her story is the prologue: the personal struggle to participate in global scientific and educational communities, and the recourse to a wide array of ad hoc strategies and networks when formal, authorized means are lacking. If Elbakyan's story has struck a chord, it is in part because it brings this contradiction in the academic project into sharp relief—universalist in principle and unequal in practice. Shadow Libraries is a study of that tension in the digital era. The Shadow Network is a story inspired by the countless battles fought, both visible and invisible, by those who strive for justice in an often unjust world. It is a tale that explores the delicate balance between light and darkness, where every decision has a consequence, and where the quest for truth comes at a steep price. The idea for this story came from a simple but powerful question: What happens when the lines between good and evil blur so completely that even the most well-intentioned must question their own morality? What happens when the institutions we trust most are corrupted from within, and the very fabric of society is threatened by those who hide in the shadows? Adrian, the protagonist, embodies the struggle between personal vengeance and the broader, more noble fight for justice. His journey is not just physical—facing adversaries, solving mysteries, and uncovering dark secrets—but emotional and psychological as well. It’s about understanding the depth of human nature: how pain can drive one toward destruction, but also how resilience can lead to redemption. This story, like any tale of this nature, is both a reflection of our world and a departure from it. While the conspiracy at the heart of the plot may feel fictional, the themes explored are all too real. In a world where power often goes unchecked and corruption lurks behind every corner, it’s easy to feel as though the fight for truth is futile. But it is in these moments of darkness that true heroes emerge, not necessarily those who wear capes, but those who choose to stand up and face the overwhelming odds. The Shadow Network is more than just an action-packed thriller; it’s a meditation on the human condition, on loyalty, trust, betrayal, and the unrelenting pursuit of justice. It is about discovering strength in the face of adversity, questioning everything we know, and, ultimately, finding light even when it seems impossible. To those who have ever felt powerless against the forces that govern the world, this story is for you. To those who have fought in the shadows to right a wrong, this story is for you. And to those who believe that hope, no matter how fleeting, can change the world, this story is for you. As you turn these pages, may you find inspiration in the characters' resilience, and may you be reminded that no matter how dark the world may seem, there is always a fight worth fighting. Welcome to The Shadow Network.

Nellie Y. McKay (1930–2006) was a pivotal figure in contemporary American letters. The author of several books, McKay is best known for coediting the canon-making Norton Anthology of African American Literature with Henry Louis Gates Jr., which helped secure a place for the scholarly study of Black writing that had been ignored by white academia. However, there is more to McKay’s life and legacy than her literary scholarship. After her passing, new details about McKay’s life emerged, surprising everyone who knew her. Why did McKay choose to hide so many details of her past? Shanna Greene Benjamin examines McKay’s path through the professoriate to learn about the strategies, sacrifices, and successes of contemporary Black women in the American academy. Benjamin shows that McKay’s secrecy was a necessary tactic that a Black, working-class woman had to employ to succeed in the white-dominated space of the American English department. Using extensive archives and personal correspondence, Benjamin brings together McKay’s private life and public work to expand how we think about Black literary history and the place of Black women in American culture.
