What are the new directions in ethnomusicological fieldwork? What do we see when we acknowledge the shadows we cast in the field? Will fieldwork continue as an integral part of ethnomusicological theory and method? Glancing forward and backward, the authors in this collection explore a range of issues that can help ethnomusicologists and those who study human experience and creativity to conceptualize the nature of fieldwork. This is the first book by ethnomusicologists to consider fieldwork as an issue-laden practice, rather than as a methodology requiring a prescriptive manual. The contributors challenge the very notion of fieldwork: its goals, the nature of knowledge gained, and the place of fieldwork in historical studies. Until now the focus in ethnomusicological writing and teaching centered around analyses and ethnographic representations of musical cultures. This book signals a new fieldwork, shifting the balance away from the data-collecting model toward an approach that is reflexive, humanistic, and experiential. It makes provocative reading for all fieldworkers, those in ethnomusicology as well as anthropology, sociology, folklore, area studies, linguistics, and other ethnographic disciplines.a"

The Visual World Of Shadows written by Roberto Casati and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-26 with Science categories.
How the perception of shadows, studied by vision scientists and visual artists, reveals the inner workings of the visual system. In The Visual World of Shadows, Roberto Casati and Patrick Cavanagh examine how the perception of shadows, as studied by vision scientists and visual artists, reveals the inner workings of the visual system. Shadows are at once a massive problem for vision—which must distinguish them from objects or material features of objects—and a resource, signaling the presence, location, shape, and size of objects. Casati and Cavanagh draw up an inventory of information retrievable from shadows, showing their amazing variety. They present an overview of the visual system, distinguishing between measurement and inference. They discuss the shadow mission, the work done by the visual brain to parse, and perhaps discard, the information from shadows; shadow ownership, the association of a shadow with the object that casts it; shadow labeling, the visual system's ability to tell shadows from nonshadows; and the shadow concept, our knowledge about shadows as a category. Casati and Cavanagh then apply the theoretical apparatus they have developed for shadows to other phenomena: illumination, reflection, and transparency. Finally, they examine the art of the shadow, paying tribute to artists' exploration of shadow, analyzing a series of artworks (reproduced in color) from a rich and fascinating art historical corpus.

What if the world isn’t what you think? In this mind-bending speculative fiction odyssey, scientist Gideon Flux unveils a chilling truth: Earth isn’t a dead rock we control—it’s a living beast, pulsing with flesh, time, and space. Houses breathe, cities throb, and every coffee mug hums with life. We’re not its masters; we’re its blood, feeding a giant we can’t escape. Step away, and it rots—but so do we.When the beast bites back with plagues and mirrors of lies, freedom flickers. Fight with rage, flee through hidden seams, or dig deeper into its tunneled veins of need, want, and desire. From the Attached Theory’s inescapable pulse to the Detached Theory’s desperate clash, this visceral journey questions: Are we in control, or just the heartbeat of something vast?Perfect for fans of speculative fiction and cosmic horror, The Organism We Are blends philosophical depth with a raw, existential edge. Dare to see the world as it truly is—alive, awake, and watching.
