A nonfiction piece about the experience of shame turned toxic and its impact on the psychological and spiritual fate of mankind. This ten-chapter effort intertwines the literary substance of the book with a workbook component, designed to get the reader to move beyond a simple mental and intellectual endeavor and move toward an exercise of personal integration with the material. The experience of shame is universal, a human experience, but an experience that has the potential to turn toxic. Toxic shame can wreak havoc on the psychological development and well-being of the individual. But this author also purports that toxic shame can equally disrupt and damage the spiritual nature of the human experience. When Demons Rush In is a two-pronged approach, both psychological and spiritual, to understanding what this author believes is a devastating reality besieging the individual of our day. Specifically looking at the father-son relationship, the author focuses on this masculine relationship, his own relationship with his father, in a way to bring awareness and credibility to the author's insights into what plagues the fathers, the sons, and the men of our present-day societies. By focusing on shame turned toxic, its roots, its causes, its consequences, the author is seeking to draw attention to what he feels is a monumental threat to the fate of humankind. With special emphasis and focus on the spiritual, the author is challenging the reader to open their minds and hearts to a reality that remains unnoticed and unrecognized. As a first-time author, I have selected a subject to write about, that reflects both my professional and personal experiences. My own personal story is one of shame turned toxic, and as a licensed clinical psychologist, I have witnessed the devastating effects of toxic shame on the individual, their families, and on their communities.

The Shadow is named shame. It hides in the mirror calling for resolution. Often cunning, sometimes illuminating and forever persistent, the shadow will prevail until acknowledged and named. It waits to be christened. Those suffering from addictions and accompanying neurosis are often lost in the shadow, seemingly unable to transcend its dominance and dark allure. Still, in those who aren't irredeemably lost, there is often an intrinsic understanding, "a sense" of the absence of health, of incompleteness and of profound loss. "Your shadow named shame" is a little treasure trove of stories and paintings beckoning the reader to meet her shadow; a shadow named shame. It is a beckoning to meet and sup with the dark lords who rule the castle, who inhibit the drawing of the curtains to light, joy and awareness. The stories illustrate the application of well established, time tested twelve step programs as proven techniques in unraveling and addressing addictive, shame based behavior; behavior leading inevitably to chaos and the loss of self. "Your shadow named shame" is a call to walk toward peace through trusting the twelve step process and your "higher power" as guides; it is a call toward a peace that you own and always did.

Discover the satisfaction of becoming the man God created you to be. In a world that’s grown increasingly confused about--and hostile toward--the very notion of masculinity, authors Jefferson Bethke and Jon Tyson send a powerful call to men everywhere: it's time to step into the light of Jesus' vision for you as a man. There's a shadow that's settled over the hearts of men today. Masculinity is in crisis. Critiques about the dangers of toxic masculinity and the abuses of patriarchal systems have grown louder than ever. The very notions of masculinity and manhood are under attack. In response to cultural shifts, some have doubled down on old stereotypes in ways that just add to the conflict and confusion. The result? Many men simply feel paralyzed--worried about saying the wrong thing, unsure what to do with their ambitions or strengths, simultaneously tempted and shamed by a hypersexualized and pornified culture. Our models and mentors have failed us. Based on their years of working in men's ministry, Bethke and Tyson have good news for men looking for clarity and courage in this age of quiet desperation. In Fighting Shadows, they help men overcome the temptations of escapism, passivity, or overcompensation; combat the most harmful shadows that men battle today, including loneliness, apathy, distraction, lust, and shame; and embrace masculinity as a God-given gift, not a curse to be avoided, suppressed, or battled. An entire generation of men is being told they should abdicate the responsibility and joy of living into God's calling on their lives—don't be one of them. If you're a man who's wondering what to do with your strength, your longings, and your gifts, it's time to step out of the shadows. Jesus has a vision for you.
