The fourth book in the Shaker Madison series immerses the detective in the midst of two grisly and compelling investigations. With his detective business a bit slow, Shake agrees to take on a mundane surveillance case on Henry Dorman a wealthy businessman that is suspected of cheating on his wife. Shake and his devoted canine partner, Barrett soon discover this case is far more complex than that when Dorman is murdered along with his mistress. With the killings, occurring directly under Madison's watchful eye the case suddenly takes a turn for the worse, which ultimately leads them in a direction that they never thought possible. In the meantime, Shake receives a frantic phone call from a long time friend, who owns a sporting camp in northern Maine. Lou Walsh a Master Maine Guide asks Shake to investigate the State of Maine's insistence of allowing an invasive fish into their local waters, which will harm their fishing and livelihood. Suspecting something dubious and explaining to Shake that the economy of the entire County is at stake, due to the State's illogical plan of allowing the alewife into the St. Croix River, Walsh pleads with the detective, hoping he will take the case. From there on, Shake soon discovers that the alewife case might be more complicated than the Dorman investigation as they discover political corruption and intrigue at every turn. Based partially on a true story, "Murder on the St. Croix" is filled with shocking twists and surprises along with non-stop action, keeping the reader glued to his seat as he is taken on a wild ride into a world of corruption, greed and murder in the northern woods of Maine.

After starting a new chapter of his life in the small town of Middleton, Maine, Shaker Madison finds himself in the midst of a tangled web of deceit, international conspiracies, and danger. He will have to rely on his K-9 partner, Barrett, to get out of this case alive! At first, it seems like an open-and-shut case. Middleton resident Charlie Smith murders the local bank's vice president in the middle of a failed robbery, and in the resulting shootout, he is killed. But as Madison digs into Charlie's past, he realizes this wasn't simply a heist gone wrong. Charlie knew a terrible event was going to happen that would change the United States forever. Why does Charlie have so many pictures of President Kennedy in his house? What's with the huge cache of weapons? Days later, when the president is assassinated in Dallas, Madison has a horrible feeling that it's all connected to his case. As the investigation continues, Madison must also adjust to his new human partner (and ex-lover), Donna Lewis, and navigate a budding relationship with his current girlfriend. Through it all, Barrett is always there to lend a paw and track down the next surprising lead!

The function of the painted wooden object ranges from the practical to the profound. These objects may perform utilitarian tasks, convey artistic whimsy, connote noble aspirations, and embody the highest spiritual expressions. This volume, illustrated in color throughout, presents the proceedings of a conference organized by the Wooden Artifacts Group of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and held in November 1994 at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia. The book includes 40 articles that explore the history and conservation of a wide range of painted wooden objects, from polychrome sculpture and altarpieces to carousel horses, tobacconist figures, Native American totems, Victorian garden furniture, French cabinets, architectural elements, and horse-drawn carriages. Contributors include Ian C. Bristow, an architect and historic-building consultant in London; Myriam Serck-Dewaide, head of the Sculpture Workshop, Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique, Brussels; and Frances Gruber Safford, associate curator of American decorative arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A broad range of professionals—including art historians, curators, scientists, and conservators—will be interested in this volume and in the multidisciplinary nature of its articles.

A tragic act of violence echoes through a small Minnesota town in this “powerful mystery” (The Christian Science Monitor). On the Minnesota prairie in the late 1980s, a drought season is pushing family farms to the brink. Against this backdrop, Little Wolves follows the story of a father searching for answers after his son shoots a local sheriff dead, while the same crime haunts a woman—a pastor’s wife and a scholar of early Anglo-Saxon literature—for reasons of her own. A penetrating look at small-town America from the award-winning author of The Night Birds, this book weaves together literary elements of folklore and Norse mythology while being driven by a riveting murder mystery.

Ogimaag written by Cary Miller and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-01 with Social Science categories.

Cary Miller's Ogimaag: Anishinaabeg Leadership, 17601845 reexamines Ojibwe leadership practices and processes in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At the end of the nineteenth century, anthropologists who had studied Ojibwe leadership practices developed theories about human societies and cultures derived from the perceived Ojibwe model. Scholars believed that the Ojibwes typified an anthropological "type" of Native society, one characterized by weak social structures and political institutions. Miller counters those assumptions by looking at the historical record and examining how leadership was distributed and enacted long before scholars arrived on the scene. Miller uses research produced by Ojibwes themselves, American and British officials, and individuals who dealt with the Ojibwes, both in official and unofficial capacities. By examining the hereditary position of leaders who served as civil authorities over land and resources and handled relations with outsiders, the warriors, and the respected religious leaders of the Midewiwin society, Miller provides an important new perspective on Ojibwe history.
