Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... BY WAY OF PROLOGUE Not marble, nor the gilded monuments Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme; But you shall shine more bright in these contents Than unswept stone, besmear'd with sluttish time. When wasteful war shall statues overturn, And broils root out the work of masonry, Nor Mars his sword nor war's quick fire shall burn The living record of thy memory. 'Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room Even in the eyes of all posterity That wear this world out to the ending doom. Sonnet, lv. It is a dark hour that has fallen to us in which to celebrate the tercentenary of the death of William Shakespeare. All the brave schemes that have been so long set on foot, with their imposing committees which met and waited for the munificent patron who might shoulder the burden of the national debt, have proved abortive, and save for a few performances of his plays here and there, and in particular at his native town of Stratford, there will be little done out of the common to mark the significance of the occasion. And perhaps it is not altogether a matter for regret; for until the recognition of his genius is the outcome of a spontaneous acclaim on the part of a whole people, and not of a few eminent litterateurs, all public adulation must fall little short of mockery. For in spite of the many lavish productions of his works during later years, ever more lavish since the time of Phelps, in spite of the numerous and tastefully-bound editions which still find a ready market in this country, in spite of the fact that certain of the Local Examinations necessitate the laborious study of one or more of his plays, it must be admitted that to the great mass of his fellow-countrymen Shakespeare is...

Shakespeare S Theatre Of War written by Nicholas de Somogyi and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

The period between 1585 (when Elizabeth formally committed her military support to the Dutch wars against Spain) and 1604 (when James at last brought it to an end) was one in which English life was preoccupied by the menace and actuality of war. The same period spans English drama’s coming of age, from Tamburlaine to Hamlet. In this thought-provoking book, Nick de Somogyi draws on a wide range of contemporary military literature (news-letters and war-treatises, maps and manuals), to demonstrate how deeply wartime experience influenced the production and reception of Elizabethan theatre. In a series of vivid parallels, the roles of soldier and actor, the setting of battlefield and stage, and the context of playhouse and muster are shown to have been rooted in the common experience of war. The local armoury served as a props department; the stage as a military lecture-hall. News from the front line has always been shrouded in the fog of war. Shakespeare’s Rumour is here seen as kindred to such equally dubious messengers as his Armado, Falstaff or Pistol; soldiers have always told tall tales, military ghost-stories that are here shown to have seeped into such narratives as The Spanish Tragedy and Henry V. This book concludes with a sustained account of Hamlet, a play which both dramatises the Elizabethan context of war-fever, and embodies in its three variant texts the war and peace that shaped its production. By affording scrutiny to each of its title’s components, Shakespeare’s Theatre of War provides a compelling argument for reassessing the drama of Shakespeare and his contemporaries within the enduring context of the military culture and wartime experience of his age.

Excerpt from Shakespeare in Time of War: Excerpts From the Plays Arranged, With Topical Allusion How small the public interest in Shakespeare and his work really is becomes apparent when we consider that many of his plays are so rarely enacted - some, indeed, never at all. We glibly accept the assurance that he' was for all time, while we forget to lay to heart that such time is even our own. How is it we so seldom see a performance of King Lear.
