Desde que el Romanticismo convirtió a Shakespeare en el santo de su máxima devoción, su obra ha ido creciendo en importancia hasta verse reflejada en la plétora de estudios, traducciones, producciones teatrales y películas que hoy se le dedican. Sin embargo, su propio relieve nos hace a veces olvidar que Shakespeare no fue bien acogido a su llegada al continente europeo en el siglo xviii. Si los clasicistas le atribuían multitud de defectos para muy pocas virtudes, después se invirtieron los términos, y el reconocimiento de su excelencia fue haciendo inoperante tal debate. Shakespeare llega a España es un estudio crítico de los hechos y problemas que rodearon la presencia de Shakespeare en nuestro país desde sus primeras manifestaciones en el siglo xviii hasta el Romanticismo, en que finalmente se aceptó y admiró su obra después de varias décadas de rechazos, suspicacias y debates.

The Mediterranean of Shakespeare’s dramas is a vast geopolitical space. Historically, it spans from the Trojan war to Greek mythology and the ancient Roman empire; geographically, from Venice and Sicily to Cyprus and Turkey, from Greece to Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa. But it is also the Mediterranean of Renaissance Italian cities and Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful example of how exotic frontiers for an English gaze may be replaced by closer yet different cultural Mediterranean frames. This volume argues that a focus on the European reception of Othello represents an important contribution to critical work on the play. The chapters in this volume examine non-anglophone translations and performances, alternative ways of distinguishing between texts, adaptations and versions, as well as differing perspectives on questions of gender and race. Additionally, a European perspective raises key political questions about power and representation in terms of who speaks for and about Othello, within a European context profoundly divided over questions of immigration, religious, ethnic, gender and sexual difference. The volume illustrates the ways in which Othello has been not only a stimulus but also a challenge for European Shakespeares. It makes clear that the history of the play is inseparable from histories of race, religion and gender and that many engagements with the play have reinforced rather than challenged the social and political prejudices of the period.

La mediación lingüística entre España y América en compleja y multifacética. Su análisis contribuye a explicar otros fenómenos de transformación sociocultural distintos de la lengua, y que requiere ser explorado desde la interdisciplinaridad.
