Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2.0, University of Hannover, language: English, abstract: I write this essay within the scope of the seminar „Shakespeare’s King Lear” where I have dealt with the topic on several different levels. I got insight into aspects such as madness, cruelty, the role of nature within the play as well as the different versions of King Lear. All these topics were quite fascinating, but as I heard a lot about them in the course of the semester, I decided to pick up a different one in my term paper: Obviously in King Lear we have to deal with a double plot, a main plot and a fully developed subplot, which share important features, but also differ to some extent. I find it interesting to take a closer look on the dynamic relation between the two plots and analyse if and in how far our meaning and understanding of the play is influenced by the mesh between the two plots. As a first step I want to start with a brief summary of the play, presenting the main characters of the two plots. This way we get a rough impression about the protagonists’ involvement in the play and have a basis for the further analysis. Then I want to go deeper and point out how the two stories connect to each other, using some chosen scenes as examples. As a next step I will utilise the results of my analysis and come up with suggestions relating to the intention Shakespeare might have had in mind when he decided to put two plots in the centre of attention. Finally I want to take a critical look on my findings and come up with my own conclusion.

Essay from the year 1993 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: keine, University of Reading (English Department), course: Shakespeare Post 1600, language: English, abstract: This essay is about the construction of the plot in King Lear. Throughout the essay I will refer to the quarto text The History of King Lear. As for the construction of the plot both form and content will be taken into consideration. Since a tragedy is normally characterized by the rise of a conflict that terminates in a catastrophe, I intend to deal especially with those aspects of form and content which relate to the conflict that is significant for King Lear. With regard to this conflict several questions can be asked. First of all there is the question of what constitutes the conflict and which different forms this conflict takes. Furthermore we need to examine whether the structure of the play and the development of the conflict correspond with each other. Moreover I would like to point out some traits of the construction, such as the double-action, which seem to be special about King Lear.

Excerpt from Short Studies of Shakespeare's Plots The following studies of Shakespeare were originally delivered as popular lectures before a mixed audience. Their design is to be suggestive rather than exhaustive, and to call attention to a method of teaching Shake speare somewhat different from that which is now employed in colleges and schools. That method, which treats the plays of Shakespeare more as convenient collections of hard words and unusual idioms than as masterpieces of literature, seems to me to be in many respects extremely unsatisfactory. It is repellent rather than attractive to the student, and it teaches him from the very outset to pursue his studies by a wrong road. Under its in uence, the play as a whole tends to be neglected, words are exalted to the exclusion of thoughts, and study is far too much on the lines adopted by the young lady who is said to have fastened down the text with a piece of elastic in order that it might not interfere with her learning the notes.
