Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet Several other allusions occur during the early years of the seventeenth century, evidently to the older Hamlet, Bokker'e Settromtix, 16os, My Name's Hamlet revenge West ward Hoe, 1607 (let these husbands play mad Hamlet and cry revenge; Rowland's Tie Night Rm, 1618 i will not cry Hamlet Revenge, etc). There is a comic passage in tile Looking Glass for London and England, written by Lodge Greene, probably before 1589, which strikes me as a burlesque reminiscence of the original of Hamlet, Act 1. Sc. Ii. 184-240; Adam, the smith's man, exclaims thus to the Clown Alas, sir, your father, - why, sir, methinlts i see the gentle man still: a proper youth he was, faith, aged some forty and ten; his beard rat's colour, half black, half white; his nose was in the highest degree of noses, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Works of Shakespeare: The Tragedy of Hamlet This edition of Hamlet aims in the first place at giving a trustworthy text. Secondly, it attempts to exhibit the variations from that text which are found in the primary sources - the Quarto of I 604 and the Folio of I 62 3 - in so far as those variations are of importance towards the ascertainment of the text. Every variation is not recorded, but I have chosen to err on the side of excess rather than on that of defect. Readings from the Quarto of 1603 are occa sionally given, and also from the later Quartos and Folios, but to record such readings is not a part of the design of this edition. The letter Q means Quarto 1604; F means Folio 1623. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: Edited, With Notes The text of this edition of Hamlet is based upon a careful collation of the quarto of 1604 and the folio of 1623 with the other early editions and the leading modern ones. All the important Daria: lertz'ones are given in the Notes; so that the reader, If he considers my text too conservative, has all the materials necessary for making one to suit himself. In the Notes my indebtedness to Furness is acknowledged on almost every page, and yet is by no means fully recorded. His edition furnishes an abstract and epitome of the vast literature of Hamlet, and is indis pensable to the teacher and the critical scholar. He found it no easy task to condense his material into two octavo volumes; and in carrying out my more modest plan I have found a like difiiculty in keeping within my limited space. The play is one of the longest (about twice as long as mamatli), and the amount that has been written about it far exceeds that on any other of Shakespeare's works. Furness does not exaggerate when he says N 0 one Of mortal mould (save iiim whose blessed feet were nailed for our advantage to the bitter cross') ever trod this earth, commanding such absorbing interest as this Hamlet, this mere creation of a poet's brain. NO sxllable that be u hispers, no word let fall by any one near him, but is caught and pondered as no nords ever have been, cxcept of Holy Writ. Upon no throne built by mortal hands has ever 'beat so fierce a light' as upon that airy fabric reared at Elsinore. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (The New Cambridge Shakespeare) Updated Edition by William Shakespeare Philip Edwards deals succinctly with the exhaustive commentary and controversy which Hamlet has provoked in the manifestation of its tragic energy. Robert Hapgood has contributed a new section on prevailing critical and performance approaches to the play in this updated edition. He discusses recent film and stage performances and actors of the Hamlet role as well as directors of the play. His account of new scholarship stresses the role of memory in the play and the impact of feminist and performance studies upon it. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical; For Use in Schools and Classes Such being the case, or at least my view of the case, I am not without apprehension, that some excess may be justly charged upon what is here done. Self-restrained and spar ing as I have meant to be, still there is a considerable addi tion to the number of notes given in my former edition. But, in the matter of annotation, it is not easy to strike just the right medium between too much and too little. Here, again, I have been mainly guided by the results of my own experience in teaching; aiming to give such and so many notes as I have found needful or conducive to a fair under standing of the Poet's thought. In the present stage of Shakespearian study, I suppose it would hardly do, even in a book designed for school use, to leave the matter of textual comment and textual correction altogether untouched. Accordingly there will be found, at the end of the play, a body of critical notes, wherein I have drawn together whatever seemed necessary or desirable to be said in the way of textual criticism, and of comment on such particulars of textual correction as are here admitted. In doing this, I have almost unavoidably been led to note a few instances of different readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmarke These facts show that during the period between 1589 and 1603 there existed a play having the story of Hamlet as its foundation, and in which there appeared a ghost appealing for revenge. In the ear lier histories of Hamlet, the father of the prince was openly put to death by his brother. It is only in the later drama, of which we have no account until the year in which we find a record that Shakespeare had become a sharer in the Blackfriars Theatre, that the murder becomes a secret crime, undiscoverable except by the aid of the unquiet Spirit of the victim. The change was bold, and lies at the foundation of the drama. It was a change characteristic of the genius of Shakespeare, and there seems reason for believing that it was he, and he alone, who planned it. Excerpt from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" The theory of Hamlet, which I state in the second chapter of this book, was first suggested to me by a performance of the play which Mr. William Poel gave some years before the war in the Little Theatre. It left out a good deal of the play and was imperfect in execution; but it seemed to me right in conception, and suddenly I understood Hamlet, or thought I did, and saw that it was not a puzzle but a masterpiece. I then tried to explain my understanding in an analysis of the play, but did not publish it because, I thought, enough and more than enough had been written about Hamlet. I am provoked to publish it now, after rewriting it, by the theories of Mr. J. M. Robertson and Mr. T. S. Eliot, with which I deal in my first chapter and which imply, or assert, that Hamlet is not a master piece at all, but an accident or a failure.
