Shanti Parav written by Des Raj Kali and has been published by Orient Blackswan Pvt Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with History categories.

Written after the great war of Kurukshetra, Shanti Parva, the twelfth book of the Mahabharata, is a treatise on peace, the ideals of statehood and peaceful governance, which also simultaneously justifies upper-caste hegemony, hierarchy and the need for organised violence. Des Raj Kali s Shanti Parav, in contrast, brilliantly parodies the peace claims of its source text and provides a radical Dalit response from the margins of history to these justifications of the ruling elite through gentle interrogation, subversive literary technique and fragments of alternate history. A post-Independence novel set in the heartland of Punjab, Shanti Parav invites a study of post-colonial socio-political dynamics in India from a Punjabi Dalit perspective. It locates the Dalit within the caste religion power nexus, and furnishes alternate narratives of the freedom struggle, terrorism, state violence, development, capitalism and democracy. The proletarian context of Shanti Parav is harsh and stark, but also colourful, irreverent, carnivalesque, even absurd. Boldly experimental, the novel has a dual narrative which playfully challenges the reader to acquire new ways of reading and interpreting a text. The fictional text in the upper half of the page narrates autobiographical stories that recount the struggles and joys of the protagonist s immediate, everyday subaltern world, while in the lower half run realistic, quirky, grand historical monologues by three retired Dalit characters who offer philosophical discourses on governance, violence and peace. A compelling read, Kali powerfully documents alternate lived realities in India

Dalit Text written by Judith Misrahi-Barak and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book, companion to the much-acclaimed Dalit Literatures in India, examines questions of aesthetics and literary representation in a wide range of Dalit literary texts. It looks at how Dalit literature, born from the struggle against social and political injustice, invokes the rich and complex legacy of oral, folk and performative traditions of marginalised voices. The essays and interviews systematically explore a range of literary forms, from autobiographies, memoirs and other testimonial narratives, to poems, novels or short stories, foregrounding the diversity of Dalit creation. Showcasing the interplay between the aesthetic and political for a genre of writing that has ‘change’ as its goal, the volume aims to make Dalit writing more accessible to a wider public, for the Dalit voices to be heard and understood. The volume also shows how the genre has revolutionised the concept of what literature is supposed to mean and define. Effervescent first-person accounts, socially militant activism and sharp critiques of a little-explored literary terrain make this essential reading for scholars and researchers of social exclusion and discrimination studies, literature (especially comparative literature), translation studies, politics, human rights and culture studies.

Courting Destiny written by Shanti Bhushan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-01 with India categories.

Born in 1925, Shanti Bhushan was witness to the formative years of the Indian republic. Courting Destiny traces the remarkable story of his life the family s origins in the town of Bijnor in the United Provinces, the experience of growing up in a joint family in Allahabad, initial encounters with the law when the Constitution of India was being framed, the distinguished career as a lawyer and law minister, culminating in the campaign for judicial accountability. These memoirs provide a participant s account of some of the most interesting and seminal cases that laid the foundations of India s constitutional history. They include the Keshav Singh case of 1964 which led to the first standoff between the executive and the judiciary; Indira Gandhi s election case which unseated her as prime minister, leading to the imposition of the Emergency; the habeas corpus case where the Supreme Court declared that during an emergency there is no right to life or liberty and hence no recourse against illegal detention; and the parliament attack case in which the Supreme Court, while acquitting Shaukat Guru of all charges of conspiracy, convicted him on a charge for which he was never accused. Together, they offer a broad perspective of the evolution of Indian law and the interpretation of the Constitution. Courting Destiny affords us a glimpse of the many fundamental and far-reaching political and constitutional changes that took place in the decades following independence. The descriptions of Shanti Bhushan s brief involvement in party politics and his time as law minister in the post-Emergency Janata government make for a fascinating insider s account of an important phase of the nation s life. In this narration of the author s life and work, the personal, the professional and the public unfold seamlessly, never at the cost of one or the other. Written in a direct and engaging style, laced with gentle humour, Courting Destiny will appeal to all those interested in India s legal, constitutional and political history. At a time when both the Bar and the Bench are under a cloud, the illustrious sixty-year career of Shanti Bhushan will be a source of inspiration for young advocates.
