The book is an attempt to present a logical approach to contextual design. With a lot of buzz around sustainability, architects analyze contexts in detail to propose sustainable designs. Hence, the contextual design approach is gaining importance in architectural practice. Architects and designers are always inclined to adopt an intuitive approach to design in historical contexts or surroundings with peculiar characteristics. There is no specific, methodical approach to design in such contexts apart from the ability to identify cues from the surrounding through experience. This book presents a sequential framework wherein one can analyze, synthesize, and generate design genotypes based on the inbuilt spatial grammar of the context. The shape grammar concept as a generative tool is presented to identify the spatial construct's grammar, which acts as a cue for design genotypes. Space syntax is explored as an analysis tool to evaluate the sympathetic spatial fitness of generated design genotypes. The book establishes that the framework is logical in its methodical approach and would generate design genotypes, which would help architects and designers have design interventions in in-fill development to achieve congruence with the surrounding environment.

Shape grammar and space syntax have been separately developed but rarely combined in any significant way. New computational design tools have evolved rapidly and been increasingly applied in the field of design in recent years, complimenting and even replacing the traditional design media and approaches. Design as both the process and product are changing due to the emergence and adoption of these new technologies. Understanding and assessing the impact of these new computational design environments on design and designers is important for advancing design in the contemporary context. Do these new computational environments support or hinder design creativity? How do those tools facilitate designers’ thinking? Such knowledge is also important for the future development of design technologies. Research shows that design is never a mysterious non-understandable process, for example, one general view is that design process shares a common analysis-synthesis-evaluation model, during which designers interact between design problem and solution spaces. Understanding designers’ thinking in different environments is the key to design research, education and practice. This book focuses on emerging computational design environments, whose impact on design and designers have not been comprehensively and systematically studied. It comprises three parts. The history and recent developments of computational design technologies are introduced in Part I. How the built environment, understood as spatial capital, governs both everyday life in cities and urban systems more generally. In an age of social and environmental crises, we need to critically rethink the role of the built environment and how best to put it to work. Measures and Meanings of Spatial Capital presents a new theory of spatial capital, arguing that spatial form is essential for building resilience into highly complex urban systems.
