Disorganization, apprehension, and poor ratings for nurse satisfaction were found in a newly created chemical dependency unit. Being that an addiction nurse carries a huge responsibility that can positively or negatively affect a patient in the initial stages of recovery from chemical dependency; the goal of this project was to determine what steps are needed to enhance the nursing care in this unit. An extensive literature search confirmed that an educational plan including essential knowledge about addiction, addiction treatment, the role of an addictions nurse, and the expectations of the job was required. A plan was formulated using Peplau's Interpersonal Relations Theory as the nursing model. Steps were outlined for the implementation, evaluation and dissemination of the educational plan and the predicted findings. The research presumption is that by enhancing nursing care through education, patient care and patient outcomes will be positively impacted.

Written by a team of nurses experienced in providing, supporting and developing high dependency care, this book discusses practical issues and explores the current evidence base for clinical practice. It covers all important skills needed and best practice for caring for high dependency patients or undertaking post registration courses to prepare them for high dependency nursing. Structured in four parts, the first, ‘Perspectives on High Dependency Care’ explores the contest of care, focusing on fundamental aspects like sleep, nutrition, pain management and stress, demonstrating how to achieve quality nursing care. ‘Pathophysiology and Treatments’ describes the main diseases that cause critical illness and treatments that patients will often be given. ‘Monitoring and Skills’ enables nurses to interpret and understand the information gained from observation and monitoring. The final part, ‘Professional Issues’ explores topics like clinical governance, reflection, practice development and managing change to assist nurses in developing their own clinical practice and professional development.

The primary aim of the exploratory case study was to explore the injection drug users' experience with received nursing care while hospitalized on a medical unit. Data were gathered using semistructured interviews with nine injection drug users at two needle exchange services. Five men and four women were interviewed for 27-90 minutes. Travelbee's (1971) interpersonal nursing model served as the theoretic framework for this study. Data were analyzed through the process of coding, pattern matching, and the convergence of emerging themes. For the rival case, the theme of Understanding Addiction emerged. For the comparison cases, the overarching themes of Marginalization, Defensiveness, and Repeated Victimization were discovered. Subthemes of Feelings of worthlessness, Mistrust, Unpredictability of care, Self-care management and delay in seeking care were also examined. The study findings reveal the cyclical process of marginalization, defensiveness, and repeated victimization that these nine injection drug users experienced when receiving care from a nurse on a medical unit. This study led to the findings that suggest that addiction-focused nursing education and role support, implementation of addiction-trained health care teams, and application of Travelbee's (1971) theory were missing from the injection drug users' hospital experience. Addiction-trained nurses are essential in providing culturally specific care for substance-dependent individuals across their addiction trajectory.
