Supervision--the shaping of spiritual leaders--occurs formally and informally in many aspects of congregational life. Every year, thousands of pastors supervise field education students and interns; staff members and lay leaders often supervise committee members or other staff; clergy and lay leaders supervise each other as a way to offer support and establish accountability. While supervision enhances the work of all concerned, it is rarely explicitly addressed in congregations. For over fifteen years, Abigail Johnson has supervised and trained others to supervise candidates for ordination within the United Church of Canada. Recognizing that supervision is as important in the formation of lay leaders as in the life of candidates for ordination, she has developed this book to guide all who supervise others in a congregation. Johnson views supervision as a ministry and shows how leaders can use their own innate gifts to enhance their supervision skills. By shaping the supervision relationship based on the gifts of the people involved as well as the context in which the relationship occurs, supervision can become an opportunity for mutual growth and learning that strengthens all other areas of ministry. This book provides a hands-on approach to supervision, addressing key areas such as identifying a learning focus, covenanting, managing conflict, understanding and using power and authority, offering and receiving feedback and evaluation, and celebrating and ending the supervisory relationship. Supervisors who pay attention to these and other key areas will help those they supervise develop their gifts for ministry in all forms.

Forming the Leader's Soul: An Invitation to Spiritual Direction encourages Christian leaders to recover the much-needed ancient discipline of spiritual direction as a pathway to nurture spiritual and emotional health amid the challenges of leading a ministry. Many Christian leaders are finding the nature of ministry to be unsustainable in today's culture, and are searching for help. They realize their initial enthusiasm and ministry training are simply not enough to reach the finish line. Leaders are discovering spiritual direction as a proven pathway to recover spiritual life and the sustainable ministry that follows.Several years ago spiritual direction was almost unheard of in the Protestant world. Today, this ministry is referred to in articles and books as well as highlighted at conferences. This book seeks to give the reader a starting point from which to explore the ministry of spiritual direction. It offers an inside look at the history, theological foundation, and the praxis of this spiritual discipline creating a desire for further exploration and participation. The author seeks to strengthen the reader's appreciation of spiritual direction by drawing upon the his own experience as a pastor for over three decades. He uses his personal journey into spiritual direction (both as a directee and director) as a window and an invitation to discover more. Each chapter ends with a short, real-life story from a leader who participates in spiritual direction.

Fomum convincingly shows from Scriptures why God chooses certain people, as well as the kind of people He chooses for leadership. The content carries a strong voice of Scripture on simple down-to-earth godly leadership principles, with examples from both the Old and New Testaments. Both the aspiring as well as those already involved in Christian leadership will find their lot. The leader must set and maintain a leadership gap between himself and those he is leading. The author suggests twelve such domains in which the potential leader should seek and establish distinction. For, no one can honestly lead from behind. You cannot lead those who are ahead of you in the knowledge and pursuit of God. Never! Leadership is a call to give God to the people. This will be a priceless gift for your leader!

Vision Burden Action written by Zacharias Tanee Fomum and has been published by Making Spiritual Progress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-31 with categories.

This book is divine counsel from God for personal spiritual progress and for the success of the spiritual leader. Since people must be led, they will of necessity be led somewhere. If the leader is going nowhere, the people will follow him--to nowhere. If he is going where God wants him to go, people will follow him and, by so doing, they will get to the place where God wants them to be. It is therefore important that the leader sees very clearly where God wants him and the people to go. After he has seen, he must be desperate to get there, not alone but with the people. He must finally move from being desperate to desperate action. The act of seeing is vision. The weight to see that which is seen become reality is burden. The right vision will lead to a burden that must be discharged by action. In Vision, Burden, Action, the author, Z.T. Fomum sets forth what he believes is a message for the Body of Christ now--a message for every believer, and not just for some members of the Body. It is for all current leaders and for all would-be leaders. It is for those who lead millions of people, and also for you who is perhaps still leading only one person--yourself. Going through this book, you will discover the fundamental reasons for the failure of many spiritual leaders in the world today: The lack of vision and the inability to communicate the vision.
