In Shaping Structures, an engineer and an architect, both longtime teachers of structures at major American universities, collaborate to present an inspired synthesis of the creative and the technical, explicating both the principles of statics and their application to the fascinating task of finding good form for structures. This richly visual volume features: * An easily understood development of the fundamentals of statics * Step-by-step demonstrations, using both numerical and graphical techniques, of simple yet powerful methods for finding form and forces for arched structures, suspended structures, cable-stayed structures, and highly efficient trusses * 120 photographs and more than 300 crisp drawings that illustrate and explain the magnificent structural triumphs of master architects and engineers -including Gustave Eiffel's famous tower, Robert Maillart's soaring bridges, Pier Luigi Nervi's landmark Turin Exhibition Hall, and many others * Calculations in both SI metric and conventional units throughout the book Requiring only the most rudimentary mathematical background yet accurate and fully functional, Shaping Structures provides an inviting point of entry to the study of structural design for engineering and architecture students -proving that the science of statics doesn't have to be lifeless, simplistic, or dull.

Times Of Creative Destruction written by Alexander Tzonis and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-08 with Architecture categories.

Times of Creative Destruction is about the years that followed the end of WWII, one of the most seminal and dramatic epochs in human history, during which extraordinary star-buildings were born, cities exploded, and an unprecedented world of a ‘Third Ecology’ emerged. Never before was there such a flurry of daring mega-constructions, such daring spatial acrobatics, ‘star’ buildings by star architects attained by star developers, mega-constructions, technological feats, and flourishing spatial acrobatics. But, for all its exhilarating creativity, this was also an era of unanticipated, intractable, irreversible destruction reducing the uniqueness and diversity of cultural, social and ecological peaks and valleys of our world, to a ‘desert flatland’, environmental inequality and unhappiness. This book critically discusses and revaluates these contradictory events, bringing together and commenting on a selection of shorter key texts by Tzonis and Lefaivre, the product of a rare research and writing partnership. The texts, published between the early 1960s and the present, are significant as documents that inform about the period. They are also important and timely because of their critical and influential role in the debates of this era, both creative and destructive.

The Process Of Making written by Maki Kuwayama and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-05 with Architecture categories.

The objective of this richly illustrated introduction is to explain and demystify the design processes in architecture, urban design, and design. Starting with the five parameters originally established by Peter von Seidlein’s Stuttgart Chair for Building Construction and Design, i.e. grid, function, detail, material, and cost, the art of design leads to their integration in a balanced whole. In the second part of the book the author analyzes in detail the application of these parameters in nine case studies from different periods, in different scales and typologies – from furniture to private and public buildings, through to urban design. The book is intended for students as well as for lay people who wish to participate in the public debate on the built environment.

Shaping The American Interior written by Paula Lupkin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Interior decoration categories.

Bringing together 12 original essays, Shaping the American Interior maps out, for the first time, the development and definition of the field of interiors in the United States in the period from 1870 until 1960. Its interdisciplinary approach encompasses a broad range of people, contexts, and practices, revealing the design of the interior as a collaborative modern enterprise comprising art, design, manufacture, commerce, and identity construction. Rooted in the expansion of mass production and consumption in the last years of the nineteenth century, new and diverse structures came to define the field and provide formal and informal contexts for design work. Intertwined with, but distinct from, architecture and merchandising, interiors encompassed a diffuse range of individuals, institutions, and organizations engaged in the definition of identity, the development of expertise, and the promotion of consumption. This volume investigates the fluid pre-history of the American profession of interior design, charting attempts to commoditize taste, shape modern conceptions of gender and professionalism, define expertise and authority through principles and standards, marry art with industry and commerce, and shape mass culture in the United States.

Iga written by Robin Bouclier and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-16 with Mathematics categories.

Isogeometric analysis (IGA) consists of using the same higher-order and smooth spline functions for the representation of geometry in Computer Aided Design as for the approximation of solution fields in Finite Element Analysis. Now, about fifteen years after its creation, substantial works are being reported in IGA, which make it very competitive in scientific computing. This book provides a contemporary vision of IGA by first discussing the current challenges in achieving a true bridge between design and analysis, then proposing original solutions that answer the issues from an analytical point of view, and, eventually, studying the shape optimization of structures, which is one of the greatest applications of IGA. To handle complex structures, a full analysis-to-optimization framework is developed, based on non-invasive coupling, parallel domain decomposition and immersed geometrical modeling. This seems to be very robust, taking on all of the attractive features of IGA (the design–analysis link, numerical efficiency and natural regularization), giving us the opportunity to explore new types of design.

Optimizing The Shape Of Mechanical Elements And Structures written by Shirley Seireg and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-01-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This work introduces a wide variety of practical approaches to the synthesis and optimization of shapes for mechanical elements and structures. The simplest methods for achieving the best results without mathematical complexity - especially computer solutions - are emphasized. The authors present detailed case studies of structures subjected to different types of static and dynamic loading, including load-bearing structures with arbitrary support conditions, rotating disks, layered structures, pressure vessels, elastic bodies and structural elements subjected to impulsive loading.

Shape And Structure From Engineering To Nature written by Adrian Bejan and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-10-16 with Science categories.

Seemingly universal geometric forms unite the flow systems of engineering and nature. For example, tree-shaped flows can be seen in computers, lungs, dendritic crystals, urban street patterns, and communication links. In this groundbreaking book, Adrian Bejan considers the design and optimization of engineered systems and discovers a deterministic principle of the generation of geometric form in natural systems. Shape and structure spring from the struggle for better performance in both engineering and nature. This idea is the basis of the new constructal theory: the objective and constraints principle used in engineering is the same mechanism from which the geometry in natural flow systems emerges. From heat exchangers to river channels, the book draws many parallels between the engineered and the natural world. Among the topics covered are mechanical structure, thermal structure, heat trees, ducts and rivers, turbulent structure, and structure in transportation and economics. The numerous illustrations, examples, and homework problems in every chapter make this an ideal text for engineering design courses. Its provocative ideas will also appeal to a broad range of readers in engineering, natural sciences, economics, and business.

Tests were conducted on hexagonal honeycomb structures of untreated 50-pound kraft paper to determine the effect of the shape of the cells on the compressive strength of the structure parallel to the flute direction. From results of these tests, a family of curves was obtained by means of which it is possible to estimate the specific compressive strength of such honeycomb structures with the range of the test data.
