Shared Beliefs in a Society is a much-needed contribution to societal psychology, a new emerging subfield of social psychology, which studies societies from a social psychological perspective. Daniel Bar-Tal presents his work of the last 15 years on shared beliefs in societies under one conceptual framework from which to identify beliefs held in common by entire societies and nations. Using examples form the history, politics, sociology, culture, and education from different societies, the author offers that social psychology can provide a unique perspective on society, but it can also benefit from integrating contributions from other social sciences into its own theorizing effort.

Social scientists have long argued about what culture is, and how to measure it. They most often use surveys to capture how culture gets internalized into human cognition, and what is widely shared within a society. Not everybody in society shares the same belief structures, however, and we need better measurement to accurately examine beliefs, which function as both shared ways of thinking and individual psychological beliefs. In this dissertation, I test recent statistical techniques that reflect modern theories of how to quantitatively identify shared belief systems (or logics). These methods do more than just average individual-level beliefs. I propose an analytic strategy, based on cultural cognitive sociology, which uncovers several previously hidden belief patterns, without presupposing differences by gender, race, and so on. By analyzing both explicit and implicit belief responses from surveys and psychological experiments, findings show heterogeneous cultural logics in each U.S. and South Korea and define the similarities and differences in the logics between South Koreans and Americans. This dissertation further underscores how cognitive patterns of beliefs are associated with educational, political, and religious outcomes, varying across stratification in the two societies.

...carefully argued, this book will have special appeal to graduate students, faculty, social psychologists (notably those yearning for Lewinian Approaches), and group-oriented sociologists. —Choice What kind of shared beliefs in a society are of importance to social systems? What functions do they fulfill? How are they informed and disseminated? What are the societal consequences of shared beliefs? All of these questions are addressed in this book in which Daniel Bar-Tal develops the notion of societal psychology, which he states can contribute a social-psychological perspective to the study of a wide range of social problems in a society. He shows how societal psychology can fulfill the promise of early social psychologists by directing attention to the societal and cultural contexts in which individuals live and by examining the reciprocal influence between these contexts and individuals. In this comprehensive volume, four themes of societal belief: patriotism, security, siege mentality, and deligitimization, are examined through well-defined examples and systematic analysis. Researchers, students and practitioners in social psychology, sociology, political science and anthropology will be stimulated and engaged by this important contribution to the field.

"Individuals who live in groups hold common beliefs which define their reality, not only as persons, but also as group members. This reality becomes especially important when group members become aware that they share beliefs and are convinced that these beliefs characterize them as a group. In this case common beliefs become group beliefs." With this statement, Dr. Bar-Tal begins his far-reaching analysis of beliefs as a group phenomenon. Group beliefs are shown to have important behavioral, cognitive, and affective implications for group members and the group as a whole. They may contribute to the behavioral direction a group takes, coordinate group activities, determine the intensity and involvement of group members, and influence the way group members affect the leaders. This book introduces and articulates the implications of a new concept of group beliefs, shedding new light on the structure and processes of groups, focusing on such phenomena as group formation, subgrouping, splits, mergence and group disintegration. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, this integrative conception opens new avenues to the study and understanding of group behavior.

Shared Reality written by E. Tory Higgins and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-04 with Psychology categories.

What does it mean to be human? Why do we feel and behave in the ways that we do? The classic answer is that we have a special kind of intelligence. But to understand what we are as humans, we also need to know what we are like motivationally. And what is central to this story, what is special about human motivation, is that humans want to share with others their inner experiences about the world--share how they feel, what they believe, and what they want to happen in the future. They want to create a shared reality with others. People have a shared reality together when they experience having in common a feeling about something, a belief about something, or a concern about something. They feel connected to another person or group by knowing that this person or group sees the world the same way that they do--they share what is real about the world. In this work, Dr. Higgins describes how our human motivation for shared reality evolved in our species, and how it develops in our children as shared feelings, shared practices, and shared goals and roles. Shared reality is crucial to what we believe--sharing is believing. It is central to our sense of self, what we strive for and how we strive. It is basic to how we get along with others. It brings us together in fellowship and companionship, but it also tears us apart by creating in-group "bubbles" that conflict with one another. Our shared realities are the best of us, and the worst of us.

What Are Norms written by Francesca M. Cancian and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1975-04-25 with History categories.

What are Norms? challenges the traditional Parsonian theory of the basis of social order and proposes a theoretical perspective that emphasises shared definitions of reality rather than personal motivation. The book begins by describing conceptions of good and bad in a Maya community. Then it explores how such normative beliefs relate to the actions of individuals and the organisation of society. Parsons' theory is not supported by previous research on attitudes and behaviour. The final chapter describes a new theoretical approach to norms and society that provides a better explanation of how people's norms relate to their actions and how norms change.

The first thing we tend to ask about people's beliefs is: are they true? We want to believe in 'the truth'. This book deals with a much more dynamic and easily addressable issue: how do our beliefs effect the world, regardless of their veracity? Our beliefs are based upon influences, the strongest of which appear to be based upon shared membership in a group, whether that be a cultural subset, a national identity, a religious identity, or a complex identity such as a participant in a scholarly discipline, or holding the identity of 'a physicist'. Movements, such as political and revolutionary identities, as well as splinter groups like self help movements, or even cults, can also serve as the nexus for an array of beliefs. Via case studies, this slim volume addresses a variety of group beliefs, who they benefit, who they disadvantage, and where they came from. Ultimately, our beliefs tell us what our needs are. This book draws upon scholarly sources, but constitutes a narrative-based inquiry open to any reader with an interest in group dynamics, and the overlap between faith and reason. This book is a above all a philosophical exploration that draws upon a variety of cross disciplinary sources to cast light upon the nature of contemporary and historical shared beliefs.
