The heritage of the pastoral industry stands as an integral symbol of identity for rural communities - both black and white - in New South Wales. Modern changes in pastoral land management, infrastructure and technology, combined with broader land-use changes and increased community interest in the conservation and rehabilitation of former grazing lands, has meant that many former pastoral properties have been abandoned or acquired for other uses. Tracking the history of these land-use changes, "Shared Landscapes" presents new ways of understanding historic heritage in settler societies through cross-disciplinary case studies that examine the heritage of the pastoral industry in two national parks. Assessing its current state of interpretation and management in New South Wales, Rodney Harrison shows that pastoral heritage is more than just 'woolsheds and homesteads', the showpieces of white, male, settler-colonial economies. Pastoral heritage is the product of the mutual histories of Aboriginal and settler Australians. It is a form of heritage that is both in, and a part of the landscape. His 'archaeological' approach to the heritage of the pastoral industry involves both recording sites and revealing attachments to community heritage, demonstrating that writing shared histories and celebrating shared heritage has the creative power to reconcile Aboriginal and settler Australians in powerful and positive ways.

The Symposium aimed to discuss the Urban Metabolism approach considering the combination of Landscapes set in a single Metropolitan Ecosystem. Accordingly, new design strategies of transformation, replacement or maintenance can compose Urban-Rural Linkage patterns and a decalage of different landscape contexts. Ecological interest in environmental sustainability, compatibility, and resilience is not tied exclusively to the balance between production and energy consumption. Thus, it is the integration over time and at several scales of the urban and rural landscapes and their inhabitants that nourish the Metropolitan Bioregion. Moreover, the Metropolitan Landscape Book's research hypothesis is the need for a Glossary, strengthening the basis of understanding Metropolitan Landscape's complexity. There is no denying boundary walls exist in China and have bearings on the socio-economic, psychological, and corporeal spaces of those who live within the walls and those who are outside them. Indeed, most urban design literature regards boundary walls negatively and would support their eradication. This study recognises the impacts of boundary walls, but it still aims to provide an inkling of how lives are lived, positively, despite these walls, and how people have over time used boundary walls as physical and social structures to help move beyond the bounds and territories imposed on them. To do this, this study maps the lived experiences of a group of vendors whose businesses operate around a boundary wall circling Jimei University in Xiamen, China, to understand how a boundary wall can be 'broken' or transgressed. Mapping the vendors leads to a consideration of boundary from a wider perspective, and to understanding the territories and boundaries as a network of relationships. This knowledge allows me to think of design as the facilitation of forming relationships. Following the mapping, the thesis develops a series of boundary design strategies which would provide readers with suggestions for use in their own exploration of creating porous boundaries. In short, this thesis is an investigation of how boundaries in the context of China's new urbanization can become shared landscapes for the common good.

The field of primatology has expanded substantially in the last twenty years, particularly with regard to studies of primates in human-altered landscapes. This text aims to review the recent literature on anthropogenic (of human origin) influences on non-human primates, bringing an overview of this important area of primatology together for students. Sustaining our agricultural landscapes is no longer just a technical, scientific or even political problem, but it has evolved into a socially complex, so-called wicked problem of conflicting social governance and economics. This creates an extreme economic obstacle where the value of ecosystem services remains low and diffuse and the transactions costs remain high and multiple.Using Uber-like business platform technology and a shared governance model, a symbiotic demand for environmental benefits is created. Enabling multi-sector transactions for environmental benefits, this platform innovation would remedy the "tragedy of the commons"; the economic nemesis to achieving landscape sustainability. In a nutshell, to sustain our agricultural landscapes a transdisciplinary approach supported by a shared governance model housed within a multi-sided platform in needed. This book introduces an assessment framework identifying governance actors, styles and ratios for socio-ecological systems. The assessment uses a new governance compass to identify the types of actors completing which tasks and identifies the styles of governance used to complete the tasks. It is aimed to anyone involved in sustainability science, agricultural policy planning, or integrated landscape design.
