Almost half of all marriages in the UK now unfortunately end in divorce; combined with the many other romantic relationships that also end every day, this amounts to a significant number of failed relationships. Many of these splits will involve children for whom arrangements are subsequently put in place for their future upbringing. These arrangements may vary from family-to-family in terms of how much input each parent subsequently has in the lives of their offspring depending on numerous factors including how civil the parents manage to remain towards each other through the process of parting and the amicability of relationships between the parents in the aftermath. Custody arrangements will typically be based around the children living with one parent (usually the mother) and with visitation rights for the father that may vary from little more than a few hours per week, through to a number of days or evenings a week and in some cases, alternate weekends. There cannot be a single 'one-size-fits-all' model for how things should be for kids when families part. However, the emphasis of this book is upon the merits of a non-traditional model for the raising of kids from failed relationships, based around establishing the best possible meeting of the needs of the child and preserving the input and involvement of both parents; that of shared-parenting. In this arrangement, the children have equal parenting input from both parents and custody is shared between them on a 50-50 basis.This book offers a personal account of the experiences, challenges and lessons learned by the author, a single-father to two daughters in the period following the break-up of his marriage and in the 10+ years since, with a focus on how a shared parenting arrangement can successfully be established between divorced or separated parents to maximise the happiness of the children based on his experience of doing so.The book starts by outlining the events and steps that led to a shared-parenting arrangement being established following separation and divorce.
