Shared Traditions written by Charles W. Joyner and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

Grounded in Charles Joyner's unique blend of rigorous scholarship and genuine curiosity, these thoughtful and incisive essays by the eminent southern historian and folklorist explore the South's extraordinary amalgam of cultural traditions. By examining the mutual influence of history and folk culture, Shared Traditions reveals the essence of southern culture in the complex and dynamic interactions of descendants of Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans. The book covers a broad spectrum of southern folk groups, folklore expressions, and major themes of southern history, including antebellum society, slavery, the coming of the Civil War, economic modernization in the Appalachians and the Sea Islands, immigration, the civil rights movement, and the effects of cultural tourism. Joyner addresses the convergence of African and European elements in the Old South and explores how specific environmental and demographic features shaped the acculturation process. He discusses divergent practices in worship services, funeral and burial services, and other religious ceremonies. He examines links between speech patterns and cultural patterns, the influence of Irish folk culture in the American South, and the southern Jewish experience. He also investigates points of intersection between history and legend and relations between the new social history and folklore. Ranging from rites of power and resistance on the slave plantation to the creolization of language to the musical brew of blues, country, jazz, and rock, Shared Traditions reveals the distinctive culture born of a sharing by black and white southerners of their deep-rooted and diverse traditions.

First Principles written by Don Foy and has been published by Algora Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Philosophy categories.

FIRST PRINCIPLES examines the flaws and broken promises of modernism, and hopes for renewal in traditionalism. The central spiritual conflict of our time is the struggle between modernism and traditionalism, and the debate over which should be our guide. Many modern conflicts appear intractable because they are hotspots in a larger cold war between entirely different frames of reference. Only by unearthing and examining the divergent frames can we begin to se e which will work better for us. "Thy will be done" versus "My will be done": according to First Principles, modernism and traditionalism differ principally in where they locate the source of values. Modernism believes in an internal, subjective source; it appeals to the ego, and its promises have captured the popular imagination; but its actual practice reveals its destructiveness. Traditionalism believes in an external, objective source: "God" (or gods). Traditionalism is not about traditions, per se - preserving old ways or keeping old rituals - but about dedicating ourselves to Objective Reality's plan.

Sacred Landscapes In Asia written by Himanshu Prabha Ray and has been published by Manohar Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Architecture categories.

Throughout history the peoples of Asia have been known for their mobility and interactions. The notion of territorially defined nations is historically recent. There was a continuing dialogue between Asian cultures which functioned at both the spatial and the temporal level, propelled by the movement of the great religions of Asia across continents via trading communities, clergies, Buddhist and Sufi scholars and communities of artisans. This book explores the aesthetic theories underlying many genres of the Asian arts. These characterise the dialogue between and amongst different Asian regions. The same Asian notions of space and time are manifested in architectural form as also in a wide variety of visual arts. The contributors in this volume identify the multi-layered discourse comprising the nature of monuments, as also the movement of motifs and symbols though sculptured and pictured representation. Some essays focus on fundamental notions such as Sunyata as common to the Indian, Korean and other Asian countries. Also, the papers bear testimony to the phenomena of dialogue and distinctiveness, continuity and change. This is evident in architectural structures, sculptural forms, particularly in iconography, and of course in the performing arts. The IIC-Asia Project in its second phase has, with purpose, traced the trajectory of transmission systems in Asian civilisation in different domains and at different levels, be it the vertical transmission from generation to generation in education, or the artistic transmission and diffusion through the arts. It is hoped that this volume will add to the meagre literature that exists on the subject and will stimulate further research and study.

Traditions Of Controversy written by Marcelo Dascal and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Controversies may be particularly prominent in one or another culture. Yet, there is hardly any culture where they do not exist. This book assumes that the practice of controversy, along with its theorization, constitutes – in each of the cultures and disciplines where it develops – a tradition. Whether there are enough shared elements in these traditions to consider them as, fundamentally, universal or not is something that can only be determined on the basis of a rich sample of controversies and theorizations thereof belonging to different traditions. This is what this volume provides to the reader. By presenting side by side controversies from the East and from the West, from the ancient past up to the present, from different domains of scholarship and action, the reader is in a position not only to admire the widespread nature, role, and richness of the phenomenon, but also to begin to evaluate its variety as well as universality. While the editors have purposefully avoided comparative studies of traditions of controversy, in order to focus on each tradition so to speak from its practitioners' point of view, some of the chapters take a bird's eye view and exemplify how such studies can be systematically conducted. In a world that is globalizing itself at a fast pace, the awareness of the multiplicity of traditions of controversy is fundamental for ensuring both that the integration of the various perspectives is harmonious and that each one of them is granted its place in a plural universe.

"Fill your home with beautiful aromas. Have you ever noticed how a single whiff of a familiar fragrance has the power to carry you instantly back to your childhood?" One of America's best-loved artists, Thomas Kinkade is known as the "Painter of Light." In his new book Family Traditions, Kinkade's beautiful paintings complement his own words and those of other great writers and thinkers, including Margaret Mead, Ben Franklin, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, to celebrate the bonds and traditions of family. Families keep us grounded with subtle reminders of our heritage and, at the same time, serve as a springboard to help us embark on new adventures. Our families provide love, support, and strength. Whatever our family tree looks like, Family Traditions recognizes the unbreakable ties and irreplaceable relationships we share with these special people in our lives, and reminds readers to "Make home a priority in life. Invest time and energy in creating a warm refuge for yourself and your family, a place where everyone can feel nurtured and cared for, safe and protected, free to be exactly who you are". -Thomas Kinkade Copyright 2005 Thomas Kinkade, The Thomas Kinkade Company, Inc., Morgan Hill, CA

Gender Tradition And Romans written by Cristina Grenholm and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-02 with Religion categories.

From a gender perspective, Romans differs from many biblical texts. It contains few explicit mentions of gender, no household code and it has been understood as promoting universalism. This volume joins several feminist commentators in showing how crucial Romans is for understanding Paul's view of gender. Divided into three parts: mapping traditions in Romans, challenging gendered traditions in Romans, and gender and the authority of Romans, the concluding essays ask: Does scriptural criticism really do justice to feminist concerns? Both avenues and obstacles for feminist scholars interpreting Romans are pointed out.

Politics And Traditional Culture The Political Use Of Traditions In Contemporary China written by Janette Jiawen Ai and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-19 with Political Science categories.

This book examines the political use of China's traditions by the party-state in contemporary China. It argues that the party-state has taken an official Marxist stance in terms of the political use of tradition. Besides looking at the official Marxist stance, this book also looks at critiques of the party-state's use of traditions by the Liberalists and Neo-traditionalists. The underlying political ideologies of these three camps are Marxism, Liberalism and Neo-traditionalism. These three political ideologies have been the most influential in Chinese politics since the Republican Revolution in 1911. The contemporary political use of China's traditions is a competition between Marxism, Liberalism and Neo-traditionalism. This competition is critical to the future of Chinese politics. This book also examines three cases, representing identical ways of the political use of traditions. The three cases are the children's reading-of-the-classics movement, the construction of a Chinese Cultural Symbolic City, the construction and subsequent removal of a statue of Confucius in and from Tiananmen Square, and the revision of the official list of public holidays. The study of the three cases attempts to shed light on the three ways Chinese traditions have been used politically by the party-state. It also attempts to explore the reasons for the party's use of Chinese traditions, the reasons for the party's scepticism with regard to using Chinese traditions, and more importantly, the competition and/or cooperation between Marxists, Liberalists and Neo-traditionalists.
