Resource Allocation lies at the heart of network control. In the early days of the Internet the scarcest resource was bandwidth, but as the network has evolved to become an essential utility in the lives of billions, the nature of the resource allocation problem has changed. This book attempts to describe the facets of resource allocation that are most relevant to modern networks. It is targeted at graduate students and researchers who have an introductory background in networking and who desire to internalize core concepts before designing new protocols and applications. We start from the fundamental question: what problem does network resource allocation solve? This leads us, in Chapter 1, to examine what it means to satisfy a set of user applications that have different requirements of the network, and to problems in Social Choice Theory. We find that while capturing these preferences in terms of utility is clean and rigorous, there are significant limitations to this choice. Chapter 2 focuses on sharing divisible resources such as links and spectrum. Both of these resources are somewhat atypical -- a link is most accurately modeled as a queue in our context, but this leads to the analytical intractability of queueing theory, and spectrum allocation methods involve dealing with interference, a poorly understood phenomenon. Chapters 3 and 4 are introductions to two allocation workhorses: auctions and matching. In these chapters we allow the users to game the system (i.e., to be strategic), but don't allow them to collude. In Chapter 5, we relax this restriction and focus on collaboration. Finally, in Chapter 6, we discuss the theoretical yet fundamental issue of stability. Here, our contribution is mostly on making a mathematically abstruse subdiscipline more accessible without losing too much generality.

Fixed Mobile Convergence Handbook written by Syed A. Ahson and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-03 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Requirements for next generation networks (NGNs) are fueling an architectural evolution. Service providers are obliged to give users access to content anytime, anyhow, anywhere, on any device. This requires a converged infrastructure in which users across multiple domains can be served through a single unified domain and all network services and business units can be consolidated on a single IP infrastructure. The Fixed Mobile Convergence Handbook is a comprehensive guide to the design, implementation, and management of converged cellular/WiFi wireless networks. This book discusses how FMC is transforming technologies as multimedia ceases to be passively consumed and unidirectional—and becomes increasingly mobile, personalized and interactive. This book also describes ways to ensure that networks remain cost-effective, scalable, reliable, and secure in the face of constant technological evolution. This material encapsulates the state of FMC, covering everything from basic concepts to research-grade material and future directions. Addressing a broad range of topics, the handbook consists of 16 chapters authored by 44 experts from around the world. Subjects include: Femtocell network technology and applications Deployment modes and interference avoidance Architecture for power efficiency Conversational quality and network planning Design of SIP-based mobility management protocols Highly respected in their field, the authors anticipate the key issues and problems that FMC presents—from application inception and deployment to system interconnection and Quality of Service (QoS). Ideal for professional mobile technology designers and/or planners, researchers (faculty members and graduate students), this book provides specific salient features and information that will guide innovation in the 21st century and beyond. Syed Ahson is a senior software design engineer with Microsoft. Previously, he was a senior staff software engineer with Motorola, where he was a leading contributor in the creation of several iDEN, CDMA, and GSM cellular phones. Dr. Mohammad Ilyas is associate dean for research and industry relations at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton. A consultant to several national and international organizations, Dr. Ilyas is a member of both the IEEE and ASEE.

This book provides a timely and comprehensive overview of the introduction of LTE technology for PPDR communications. It describes the operational scenarios and emerging multimedia and data-centric applications in demand and discusses the main techno-economic drivers that are believed to be pivotal for an efficient and cost-effective delivery of mobile broadband PPDR communications. The capabilities and features of the LTE standard for improved support of mission-critical communications (e.g., proximity services, group communications) are covered in detail. Also, different network implementation options to deliver mobile broadband PPDR communications services over dedicated or commercial LTE-based networks are discussed, including the applicability of the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) model and other hybrid models. Radio spectrum matters are also discussed in depth, outlining spectrum needs and providing an outlook into allocated and candidate spectrum bands for PPDR communications and suitable dynamic spectrum sharing solutions in PPDR communications. Explanations are accompanied by a vast collection of references that allow the more intrigued reader to gain further insight into the addressed topics.
