In this book, a novel agent-based, realistic, and general motion model of pedestrians and (human-driven) vehicles is proposed. It can capture a large variety of interactions and be utilized to assess the applicability of different shared space schemes and in the advent of autonomous vehicles. Sustainable urban traffic and transport is a key to successful future development of our society. Urban traffic is predicted to increase further, and the lack of traffic space makes it undesirable to maintain today's strict separation of different modalities. Shared space design principles promote a flexible use of traffic infrastructure by enabling different traffic modalities to share the same space with few or no explicit regulations. Simulation technologies are becoming an essential tool for traffic planners and managers to analyze future urban areas before new concepts and technologies are applied on the road. The proposed simulation model can suitably replicate the motion behaviors of pedestrians and vehicles from new environments with incremental integration of new behaviors and calibrating model parameters.

Originally published in 1979. In this forcefully argued book, Milton Santos shows that contemporary explanations of urbanization and spatial organization in underdeveloped countries are inadequate. This failure is attributable to their origins in theories elaborated to explain the development of advanced Western societies. Santos' work provides the basis for the new theory which is so badly needed. He describes the urban economy in these countries in terms of two circuits of activity – an upper circuit consisting of those enterprises and structures which are based on modern technology and are oriented towards the advanced capitalist world, and a lower circuit comprised of more traditional processes and forms of exchange. The dialectical interaction of these two circuits is seen to generate the patterns of growth, forms of State intervention and, above all, the spatial organization characteristic of Third World economies. This was a revision and translation of L’Espace Partagé (1975).

This book presents urban transition experiences over nearly three decades in Bangalore based on the narratives of the city's street-based sex workers. Sex workers – female, male, and transgender – have been omnipresent in Bangalore's streets for decades. However, despite being blacklisted as 'undesirable' and hazards to the 'ideal public', they have their own unique imaginaries and narratives of the city and its mutations. In mapping out their spatial and social ecosystems and experiences with technology, this book redraws, rewrites, and relooks at a city and its transformations from their perspectives. The analysis of their experience is anchored to concepts around neoliberal urbanism, gender, labour informality, and the politics of technology. The authors take an unconventional journey through their spaces, comrades, and battles to announce and affirm their individuality and agency through their empowerment strategies, and through their struggles to reclaim their spaces and assert their identities as informal workers and legitimate citizens of the city.
