The conservation and management of cultural landscapes, interpreted as the result of the interrelationships among economic, social and environmental factors through time and space, emerges as essential components in the definition and application of a modern approach to sustainable development. Cultural landscapes are the result of management practices and knowledge accumulated in human history and contribute not only to the cultural heritage of the world, but also to biodiversity and aesthetic beauty, providing also multiple goods and services for the development of rural areas. However, landscapes are severely endangered not only by some effects of the socioeconomic development, but also by inappropriate policies in agriculture, forestry and nature conservation. This interdisciplinary book presents a range of different methods developed to analyse, restore and manage cultural landscapes, reporting a number of case studies from Europe and north America, but raising some questions about the need for a revision of some past orientations.

The Rise And Fall Of Countryside Management written by Ian D. Rotherham and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-16 with Nature categories.

For at least half a century since the emergence of Country Parks and Forest Parks, countryside services have provided leisure, tourism, conservation, restoration and regeneration across Britain. Yet these services are currently being decimated as public services are sacrificed to the new era of austerity. The role and importance of countryside management have been barely documented, and the consequences and ramifications of cuts to these services are overlooked and misunderstood. This volume rigorously examines the issues surrounding countryside management in Britain. The author brings together the results of stakeholder workshops and interviews, and in-depth individual case studies, as well as a major study for the Countryside Agency which assessed and evaluated every countryside service provision in England. A full and extensive literature review traces the ideas of countryside management back to their origins, and the author considers the wider relationships and ramifications with countryside and ranger provisions around the world, including North America and Europe. The book provides a critical overview of the history and importance of countryside management, detailing the achievements of a largely forgotten sector and highlighting its pivotal yet often underappreciated role in the wellbeing of people and communities. It serves as a challenge to students, planners, politicians, conservationists, environmentalists, and land managers, in a diversity of disciplines that work with or have interests in countryside, leisure and tourism, community issues, education, and nature conservation.

The Wild by Design seminar was aimed at all those involved in the conservation of sites and landscapes. It was intended to address critical issues of landscape management and landscape change including how agricultural, urban and post-industrial landscapes change and evolve. It considered the impacts of agricultural diversification and extensification, as well as proposals for the release of upland areas from pastoral grazing management. The Ploughing on Regardless seminar took place in October 2003. It considered the impacts of cultivation on our natural and historic environments, how they have and are being assessed and how damage can be mitigated. It raised issues of the ways in which Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) can protect uncultivated land from improvement. Speakers and participants at both events included landscape professionals, archaeologists, ecologists, earth scientists, planners, conservationists and workers in education.

This volume is a retrospective publication of contributions originally to two national conferences / seminars held in Sheffield, on the theme of 'Urban Environments - History, Biodiversity and Culture'. To the updated papers from those events we have added invited current contributions on the themes of urban nature and urban ecology. Ideas and issues in urban ecology become more significant as globalisation, urbanisation and cultural severance shape our world and our future ecologies. This is paralleled by increasing interest in the underpinning science and research paradigms in relation to urban environmental spaces. In the early 2000s, ecologists new to the urban context suddenly became excited about the juxta-position of pollution and biodiversity in degraded and contaminated sites, something well-known to urban ecologists and naturalists since the 1980s or earlier. Similarly, the contributions of urban gardens to nature conservation were greeted with surprise and excitement.

Eolved, rather than designed or planned, these derelict, abandoned, and marginal spaces or wildernesses are frequently overgrown with vegetation and host to a wide range of human activities. They include former industrial sites, landfill, allotments, cemeteries, woods, infrastructural corridors, vacant lots and a whole array of urban waste lands at a variety of different scales. Frequently maligned in the media, these landscapes have recently been re-evaluated and this collection combines these fresh perspectives in one volume. Includes around 100 colour images.

Organised by The Landscape Conservation Forum, the Between a Rock and a Hard Place seminar was aimed at all those involved in the conservation of rural sites and landscapes. It considered the impacts, both individual and cumulative, of mineral extraction on our landscapes. The debate addressed why we are so concerned about these impacts, and what steps are being, and could or should, be taken to conserve our natural and historic environments. The seminar considered the impacts of mineral extraction on our natural and historic environments; how they have and are being assessed and how those impacts can be mitigated.
