There were other settlers on the westernmost shores of Puget Sound when David Shelton arrived in 1854. Development was slow, but by 1888, Shelton's claim prevailed to become the hub of commerce and the seat of Mason County. The town welcomed "all who were willing to work," promoted journalist Grant C. Angle. Shelton became the headquarters for the Simpson Timber Company and a research center for Rayonier, Inc. Shellfish growers shipped oysters across the country. Strong fellowships were built through churches and organizations such as the Masons, and celebrations like the Fourth of July and the Forest Festival. The surrounding forests and waters provided work and recreation, but the town of Shelton gave its residents a sense of community.

The lines of descent in this book all originate with Ralph Shelton of Middlesex Co., Va. He was born in England. In 1707 he married Mary? He and his wife had eleven children. Except for the first three, all births were recorded in the Christ Church Register of Middlesex Co., Va. Majority of the descendants in this book descend from Crispin Shelton (b. 1713) and his youngest brother, Daniel (b. 1729). Descendants live in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas and elsewhere.

Sarah Shelton Henry was thought to be insane and/or possessed by the devil. Today Sarah Shelton Henry would probably be diagnosed as suffering from postpartum depression and or puerperal psychosis. These are two types of illnesses that sometime affects women after the birth of a child. Sarah Shelton’s mental state of mind did began to decline after the birth of her last child. In fact, in a letter written to Patrick Henry’s sister from her mother stated “we feel Sarah is losing her mind after the birth of little Neddy. Most people of Virginia did not know what the Henry family had to endure day after day for three to four years. This dark secret could never be exposed. The dark secret of having your wife living her life in the cellar. These were very politically active years for Patrick Henry. He was trying to make a change for Virginia and also becoming the first governor.

Joseph Ayers, son of Jonathan Ayers and Mary Ayers, was born 7 Nov 1814 in Knox County, Tennessee. He married Charlotte "Lotty" Shelton, daughter of Palatiah Shelton and Elizabeth Dunnington, on 25 Aug 1836, in Knox County, Tennessee. They had 11 children. Charlotte died in 1879 in Love Lake, Macon County, Missouri. Joseph married Ruth Kinsley Dunnington on 17 Feb 1881, but separated before her death in 1885. Joseph died 27 July 1907 and is buried in Love Lake, Macon County, Missouri. Their ancestors and descendants have lived in North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Georgia, and other areas throughout the United States.
