Blood Road written by R. Keith Schoppa and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-01 with History categories.

Blood Road is a complex mix of social history, literary analysis, political biography, and murder mystery. It explores and analyzes the social and cultural dynamics of the Chinese revolution of the 1920s by focusing on the mysterious 1928 assassination of Shen Dingyi—revolutionary, landlord, politician, poet, journalist, educator, feminist, and early member of both the Communist and Nationalist parties. The search for Shen's killer details the contours of revolutionary change in different spatial contexts—metropolitan Shanghai, the provincial capital Hangzhou, and Shen's home village of Yaqian. Several interrelated themes emerge in this dramatic story of revolution: the nature of social identity, the role of social networks, the political import of place, and the centrality of process in historical explanation. It contributes significantly to a new understanding of Chinese revolutionary culture and the 1920s revolution in particular. But Blood Road remains at base a story of people linked in various relationships who were thrust, often without choice, into treacherous revolutionary currents that shaped, twisted, and destroyed their lives.

China S Left Behind Wives written by Huifen Shen and has been published by NUS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-01 with Social Science categories.

In China's Left-Behind Wives, Huifen Shen tells the extraordinary story of an overlooked group of women who played an important role in one of the largest waves of migration in history. For roughly a century starting around 1850, large numbers of young men from southern China travelled to Southeast Asia in search of work. Some were married and others returned to marry, but they routinely left their wives in China to handle family affairs. Drawing on in-depth interviews, archival materials, local gazetteers, newspapers and periodicals, the author describes the experiences of left-behind wives in the Quanzhou region of Fujian from the 1930s to the 1050s, a time when war and political change caused customary practices to break down. Migrant marriages were nearly always arranged, and girls rarely met their husbands before the wedding. Normally a bride lived with her new husband for just a few weeks or months, after which he went abroad. The circumstances in the 1940s and 1950s were such that many of these young women rarely, or never, saw their husbands again. When the Pacific War cut off communications, the loss of remittance money meant that they faced a difficult struggle for survival. The war's end brought a brief respite, but the communist ascendency led to further difficult adjustments. Ultimately, the experiences of the left-behind wives drew them into public life and business, and as Overseas Chinese policies, and attitudes towards women, changed in China, they came to play an increasingly significant part in the processes of development and modernization.

"Shen Gua (1031–1095) is a household name in China, known as a distinguished renaissance man and the author of Brush Talks from Dream Brook, an old text whose remarkable “scientific” discoveries make it appear curiously ahead of its time. In this first book-length study of Shen in English, Ya Zuo reveals the connection between Shen’s life as an active statesman and his ideas, specifically the empirical stance manifested through his wide-ranging inquiries. She places Shen on the broad horizon of premodern Chinese thought, and presents his empiricism within an extensive narrative of Chinese epistemology.Relying on Shen as a searchlight, Zuo focuses in on how an individual thinker summoned conditions and concepts from the vast Chinese intellectual tradition to build a singular way of knowing. Moreover, her study of Shen provides insights into the complex dynamics in play at the dawn of the age of Neo-Confucianism and compels readers to achieve a deeper appreciation of the diversity in Chinese thinking."

The Un-Affirmed Core gives a fresh, careful and deeply compassionate look at the great complexity of issues surrounding homosexuality. Author Bryan Shen provides rich explanations between modern psychology, real-life experiences and traditional sexual ethics. The true case stories scattered throughout are a special highlight. This book reduces prejudice, fear and misunderstanding. It addresses the important people around those who struggle alone, afraid, confused and hidden. It equips readers with the ability to provide support, from the psychological-assistive approach as well as the spiritual-pastoral approach, to those who are in need. Through many detailed case studies and discussions with leading therapists in the US, Asia and Europe, an integrated understanding of the factors behind and around homosexuality is detailed in this book. This understanding continues to be refined through contact with such clients and their families who struggle in silence. Reader Reviews: “Shen’s motivation is to reduce misunderstanding in conservative religious communities that often condemns people with same-sex attractions. He emphasises that these are not chosen, but results from a number of contributing factors beyond the control of individuals. His goal is to educate families and communities to eliminate condemnation and rejection of these individuals, and instead to be empowered to relate with understanding and compassion. None of the information goes against the teachings of the Church.” Rev Esther Wakeman, Ph.D. Lecturer, McGilvary College of Divinity, Payap University “As a parent, after searching for answers and ways to understand our son better, this book was such a blessing. It is easy to read, full of wisdom, well-researched, clear, compassionate and incredibly insightful. I felt for the first time a sense of peace and encouragement on our journey as parents. An important read for all parents.” Homemaker Married and mother of three children, Australia

This collection of short stories reveals the plight and strength of the common Chinese people. There are contradictions between the 'new' and the 'old', and also between human values with enough integrity to nurture life, versus corruption that leads to the decline and death of a culture.
