What better introduction could there be to Finnegans Wake, perhaps the most difficult literary work ever written, than the Sherlock Holmes stories, perhaps the most readable and popular stories ever written? James Joyce made extensive use of Sherlockian material in his work; indeed, Jenkins argues, this use goes to the core of the meaning and structure of Finnegans Wake. In this exhaustive and entertaining analysis, Jenkins provides the specific references to Holmes' adventures in the Wake and examines the context in which they occur and how they relate to the larger Wake themes. Readers of world literature, especially Joyce and Doyle scholars and students, will find this a fascinating and useful volume.

This collection of short mysteries by the international-bestselling author of Dust and Shadow “belongs on the top shelf with the very best of Doyle’s” (Nicholas Meyer, author of The Seven-Per-Cent Solution). Inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, Edgar Award–finalist Lyndsay Faye has masterfully woven these quintessential characters into her own works of fiction—from her acclaimed debut novel, Dust and Shadow, to a series of short stories for the Strand Magazine, whose predecessor published the first Sherlock Holmes story in 1892. The best of Faye’s Sherlockian tales, including two new works, are brought together in a collection that spans the character’s career, from self-taught upstart to lauded detective, both before and after he faked his own death over a Swiss waterfall in 1894. In “The Lowther Park Mystery,” the unsociable Holmes is forced to attend a garden party at the request of his politician brother and improvises a bit of theater to foil a conspiracy against the government. “The Adventure of the Thames Tunnel” brings Holmes’s attention to the murder of a jewel thief in the middle of an underground railway passage. With Holmes and Watson encountering all manner of ungrateful relatives, phony psychologists, wronged wives, outright villains, and even a peculiar species of deadly red leech, The Whole Art of Detection is a must-read for any fan of historical crime fiction. “If Lyndsay Faye’s byline weren’t on the cover, readers might deduce that the Sherlock Holmes mysteries in The Whole Art of Detection actually came from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.” —David Martindale, Fort Worth Star-Telegram

It's 1890. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson return to Baker Street after a night pursuing a vicious criminal. Inspector Lestrade is waiting for Holmes with a proposition of national importance. Lestrade tells Holmes that a school of detection has been formed to train a new breed of modern investigators that will serve in Great Britain and the Empire. Most students will become police officers. Some, however, will become bodyguards and spies. Holmes begins instructing his decidedly curious assortment of students from home and abroad. He does so with his customary gusto and inventiveness. Scotland Yard, in the main, allocates crimes to solve and Holmes mentors his students. Occasionally, he shadows them in disguise in order to assess or even directly test their abilities with creative scenarios he devises. Certain crimes investigated by the students might appear trivial, such as the re-positioning of an ornament atop a garden wall, yet it will transpire an assassin has moved the ornament to create good sightlines in order to commit murder with a sniper's rifle. Other mysteries are considered outside the domain of the police. For example, the inexplicable disappearance of a stone gargoyle, which is linked to an ancient family curse. Or a man suffering from amnesia who discovers that not only has he acquired a secret life but also gained an implacable enemy, too. Holmes, with the ever- trustworthy Doctor Watson in his wake, is kept busy with his students' cases, ranging from minor to serious, sometimes rectifying their mistakes and saving them from a variety of disasters. These eleven wonderful new adventures and intrigues include tales such as 'The Gargoyles of Killfellen House', 'Sherlock Holmes and the Four Kings of Sweden' and 'The Case of the Cannibal Club'.

In this spirited addition to Twayne's Masterworks Studies, Victorian literature scholar Rosemary Jann serves up a thoroughly engaging examination of Doyle's masterpiece. With her lens focused sharply on the issue of social order as manifested in Adventures, Jann begins her analysis with an illuminating portrait of the literary and historical milieu from which Holmes emerged. What follows is a consistently stimulating reading of the text, inspecting, among other topics, narrative structure, the social aspects of detective fiction, the implications of Holmes's detection methods for conceptions of crime and social order, and Adventures's assumptions about the "problematic" nature of female sexuality. Throughout the study, Jann groups and evaluates the 12 stories composing Adventures, probing each for what it tells us about social order, both in Doyle's time and in our own. "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes", Jann maintains, "will always retain their definitive place in detection fiction because they work its magic with unparalleled wit and assurance, embracing crime, irrationality, and evil, in order ultimately to reassert justice, reason, and right". A study that not only enlightens but entertains readers from first page to last, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Detecting Social Order contributes fresh new perspectives to the extant literature and, as such, is sure to attract students, scholars, and the legions of Holmes aficionados.

In December of 1912, at the London Geology Conference, a fake ape-man fossil, composed of an ape's jaw and part of a human skull, was presented as evidence of a newly discovered species of prehistoric man, named "Piltdown Man" for the site of its purported discovery in England. The hoax was a distraction to science for over forty years, and an embarrassment to anthorpology when modern analysis exposed the fakery. Sherlockian scholars have long wondered at the singular omission of the infamous Piltdown hoax from the chronicals of Dr. Watson. Did Sherlock Holmes investigate and fail to discover the truth? If he discovered the truth, why did he not expose it at the time? New evidence indicates that Holmes DID learn of the hoax. Why he kept it secret is a sinister tale of grisly murders, weird intrigues, and the arcane politics of a Europe bent on rushing madly toward what historians would call World War One. Holmes and Watson risked death following a trail of clues to a fantastic plot to use the London Conference in a scheme to unseat the crowned heads of Europe. Holmes detected the hand of Professor Moriarty behind the scenes, and finally had Moriarty in his revolver sights.

Three novels in one volume: “Donald Thomas masterfully evokes the flavor of Doyle’s original stories of the great detective” (Publishers Weekly). In these sixteen tales of intellectual derring-do, Sherlock Holmes is shown at the height of his powers: He co-operates with a young Winston Churchill in the famed siege of Sydney Street; helps defeat a plan for a German invasion outlined in the Zimmerman Telegram; establishes a link between two missing lighthouse keepers and the royal treasures of King John; contends with a supernatural curse placed upon an eccentric aristocrat; and discovers a lost epic poem of Lord Byron. Everywhere in these finely wrought tales, encompassing the critically acclaimed The Execution of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes and the King’s Evil, and Sherlock Holmes and the Ghosts of Bly, riddles and mystery hover in the air. But they are not beyond the grasp of the incomparable Sherlock Holmes.

Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s—"the Paris of the Orient"—was both a glittering metropolis and a shadowy world of crime and social injustice. It was also home to Huo Sang and Bao Lang, fictional Chinese counterparts to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The duo lived in a spacious apartment on Aiwen Road, where Huo Sang played the violin (badly) and smoked Golden Dragon cigarettes as he mulled over his cases. Cheng Xiaoqing (1893–1976), "The Grand Master" of twentieth-century Chinese detective fiction, had first encountered Conan Doyle’s highly popular stories as an adolescent. In the ensuing years he played a major role in rendering them first into classical and later into vernacular Chinese. In the late 1910s, Cheng began writing detective fiction very much in Conan Doyle’s style, with Bao as the Watson-like-I narrator—a still rare instance of so direct an appropriation from foreign fiction. Cheng Xiaoqing wrote detective stories to introduce the advantages of critical thinking to his readers, to encourage them to be skeptical and think deeply, because truth often lies beneath surface appearances. His attraction to the detective fiction genre can be traced to its reconciliation of the traditional and the modern. In "The Shoe," Huo Sang solves the case with careful reasoning, while "The Other Photograph" and "On the Huangpu" blend this reasoning with a sensationalism reminiscent of traditional Chinese fiction. "The Odd Tenant" and "The Examination Paper" also demonstrate the folly of first impressions. "At the Ball" and "Cat’s-Eye" feature the South-China Swallow, a master thief who, like other outlaws in traditional tales, steals only from the rich and powerful. "One Summer Night" clearly shows Cheng’s strategy of captivating his Chinese readers with recognizably native elements even as he espouses more globalized views of truth and justice.
