Al marito ella confessa di amare un altro uomo e di volere da lui il divorzio, divorzio che suo marito Georges non intende concederle. Da qui si dipana una storia che avrà risvolti difficilmente prevedibili sia per la nostra Françoise Dubois che per il lettore.

Robert Adey nel suo libro Locked Room Murders (letteralmente: Omicidi in una stanza chiusa a chiave) ha classificato ben 2019 romanzi che parlano di delitti commessi in una stanza chiusa a chiave e per tutti i 2019 casi ci svela il mistero. L’opera di Adey è stata proseguita da Brian Skupin che ai 2019 romanzi ne ha aggiunti altri 1157 per un totale di ben 3176 casi. Il delitto della stanza chiusa viene codificato da precise regole: l'indagine si svolge intorno a un delitto compiuto in circostanze apparentemente impossibili come quello scoperto in una camera chiusa dall'interno. La caratteristica principale di questo genere di romanzo non è quello classico del poliziesco, cioè scoprire il responsabile, bensì scoprire come il crimine sia stato commesso. Non sono considerati delitti della stanza chiusi quelli che presentano elementi soprannaturali e quelli la cui soluzione si basa su passaggi segreti. Nel presente romanzo, Sherlock Holmes deve risolvere l’omicidio della contessa Freya Earhart rinvenuta sgozzata in uno sgabuzzino chiuso a chiave dall’interno e con una unica finestra protetta da una fitta inferriata. La soluzione a cui perviene Holmes è sorprendente, e cosa che rende unico il romanzo, la soluzione prospettata non rientra in nessuno dei 3176 delitti della camera chiusa di cui abbiamo parlato in premessa. Pubblicato per la prima volta su Amazon il romanzo ha avuto un enorme successo per cui è stato tradotto anche negli Stati Uniti con il titolo: Sherlock Holmes and the Murder of Lady Chatterley, ricevendo recensioni pari a 4 stelle su 5.
